Our 4cyl and 6cyl engines burn quite little fuel in most cases. The 4cy 22re burns less of course. I can usually run on $30 for a week and a half, and that is commuting to and from work sites, etc.
I haven't taken the time to look up the conversion factors to figure out what you are getting in mpg, but my BIL reported better mileage with his Chev V8 4x4 than my 4 banger '85 Toyota or my V6 '94 T100. He reported around 22 mpg on the road. My trucks ran typically 18 to 20.
Ive got a '99 Ford F-150 4x4 regular cab with an 8' bed. Its got a 5.4L SOHC 16-valve V8 mated to a 4100R tranny (4-speed electronic automatic).
My daily commute is 40 miles round trip (20% in town, 80% country roads) and I get about 16.5 mpg.
However, I have a K&N air filter and the exhaust is a cat-back dual setup with a Flowmaster 50 Series 1 in/2 out muffler and dual tailpipes. The pipes are 2 1/2 after the cat and 2 1/4 before the cat. Because my setup is a little bit more freer-flowing than the stock setup, my engine doesnt have to work as hard to do the same amount of work. I also have 3.73 rear gears, a lot of other trucks either have 3.55s, 4.10s or 4.50s. Im right in the middle. My engine doesnt lug all that much but even at 70 mph it isnt turning over 2,000 rpm, so it goesnt burn fuel like crazy either.
For a V8, my truck pulls great fuel economy. The newer trucks dont pull great milage because they are all trying to get 300 hp and that eats up a lot of fuel. I think the only truck that has actually improve fuel economy in the past few years is the Tundra. VVT-i makes a BIG difference in both power and fuel economy. Ford also has similar technology but Ford also added a lot of weight to the '05 F-150, so the performance and fuel economy isnt any better.

I find that hard to believe. Everyone I know who has a Chevy full-size is getting about 14 mpg and the ones with S-10s (4x4, extended cab, 4.3L) are only getting 16-18 mpg.
Those Chevys burn more gas at idle than your Toyotas should even at full-throttle. GM's antiquated engines dont get great fuel economy, its good but 22 mpg on a 4x4 truck aint happenin'. Smells like bs to me...

Weel, I have a 2002 chevy tahoe w/5.3 liter and an 89' yoyo 4wd w/22re and they get almost the same-20 ish!! I only drive a bout 2 mile max to work, so a tank of gas will last me approx. 3 weeks! Wife drives the tahoe, shes got a lighter foot, so that explains the better mileage. but no joke, it really gets that high of mileage. My dad has a 2001 z71 w/ the same motor and he gets roughly the same (20 mpg).when i first put my k&n on, i got 26, but i was goin to school- 125 mile round trip. just my .o1

Im calling BS on this one. No way in heck does a Tahoe get 26 mpg. Perhaps you meant 26 miles per tank...

No kidding a lot of 4x2 reg cab 4-banger compact trucks are lucky to be able to pull 26 mpg, yet a Tahoe 4x4 V8 gets 26??? Yeah right, then you woke up!!!

let me clear up my post for ya'll- my tahoe & toyota truck get around 20 miles per gallon-aka 20ish in my previous post. I was NOT claiiming that the tahoe got 26. I was sayin that when I pu my k&n fipk on my TOYOTA truck it got 26 mpg. Is that clearer? I was simply calling B>S> on whoever posted that the chevys only got about 14. Period! FORD truck gas buners cant even compare to chevy/gm motor-they suck! literally!
oh, i love this. hearing someone say that fords suck just brightens my day. they really do suck gas. my grandfather just bought a new dodge ram diesel and its gettin better mileage than my truck this sucks for me but also shows that greatness of dodge.

My truck probably gets about 20mpg, but then again every time I'm on the highway I'm doing 120mph. I'd say if I didnt drive it like a psycho... maybe 23-25. But then again, with the gas prices where they are, I might look into getting myself a prius soon. That or find a light car/truck with a diesel 4/6.

And I'm gonna damn near call bull all around..........
The Tahoe is *not* gettin' 20mpg. Sorry!
Z71 full size trucks are also not gettin' 20mpg. Sorry again!
I've got buddies with all of the above (one guy's workin' on his 2nd Tahoe) and my '98 F150 w/ the 4.6L.
We all get similar results. Low teens for the most part and higher teens on the highway.
BTW, getting *over* the EPA mileage estimates is a first sign somebody's got the boots on!
As for the Dodge diesel........possibly!! Optimum rpm's on the newer diesels with VERY low freeway speeds can see some higher #'s.........(though I'm still skeptical of 20)
But as for Dodge pride..........you certainly don't want to bring up Dodge gas engines.........there's none worse in the full-size market for fuel economy!!
Well padre, Im sorry to bust to world size bubble, but my tahoe(2002, 5.3, 2wd) is gettin the 20mpg. My old man's 2001 271 is gettin 19-20-he works offshore so he has a long drive-approx 400 miles. So if you think its b.s., why dont you take this as an invite and come see for yourself?? since you're absolutely positive our rides aint gettin what i say they're gettin. I suppose you dont think my 89 4wd ext, cab 22re get 20ish either huh?
