ok. my truck was rebuilt a while back by a guy that really didnt know what he was doing. this was before i bought the truck, for your info. i have had many problems with this engine because of the rebuild. would it be better to try and repair all the was messed up or should i go get a new engine. a quote i got for a rebuilt 22re with a new head was $2700. my problem is i dont know what else will go wrong with my current engine. the engine is not in good shape and would not be suprised if it just died forever. what do u all think?

Check junkyard websites. www.pullapart.com has engines starting at $120 something i believe. Or close to that anyway, they should at least have one engine at one of their places. I would try there.
well the guy that rebuilt it didnt replace anything. he used all the old gaskets and most likely lost parts while he was workin on it. he didnt clean the injectors, which needed to be cleaned. i think that atleast on of the rings r bad or put on wrong. the engine has a slight "knock" to it. along with the usual "ticking."
i guess i dont know enough about engine to tell u exactly what is wrong. but it just doesnt run right and something new goes wrong every week.
i would love to put a 350 in but would it be better to just stick with a 22re?
also that 22re i quoted was with install

with the price of gas do u really want that v8? those 22r/22r-es will last for ever if they are taken care of. Go for the rebuilt engine if the guy ported and polished it

that was be sweet. it would be sweet to have a 350 but it would be the smart decision to put a 22re back in it. is there any other alternatives for my engine problems? i just wanna make sure that im not gonna spend almost $3000 for something i could fixed easily or when my truck only had one more problem.

Dont put a 350 in it, GM engines are junk. Id put a 3.4L in it before I went to any non-Toyota engine.
Id look into getting your current engine rebuilt or getting a remanufactured one. Sounds like the previous owner tried to do it the cheap way and then sold it before anything major went wrong. Buying used is often one of those "buyer beware" kinda deals.
Best 'o luck to ya...

yea, your best bet is keeping the 22re. It might be smart to do some motor work while the motors torn appart. IF you have the $ to spend, id put a little into it considering that these motors are way underpowered.

They arent underpowered. Youve got to remember, the 22R-E came out in the mid '80s. Its a relatively simple, SOHC engine.
It might not have all the horsepower in the world, but it makes plenty of torque AND it makes it a relatively low rpm (where you can actually use it, not at 4500 where a lot of engines nowdays make their power).
If you compare HP to cc, its actually better than a Ford 302 V8 and a GM 305 V8. Both of those made about 210 hp, the 22R-E made about 118 hp. Consider that the Ford/GM engines were 5.0L and the 22R-E is a 2.4L, it actually made more power per cc.
To say that the 22R-E is "underpowered" compared today's engines is like comparing apples to oranges.

good point. I guess it feels underpowered because i have slightly larger tires on it and no gearing change. It just seems like at highway speeds going up even the slightest grade with my truck i fall behind traffic with the pedal floored going in and out between 4th and 5th. (can do almost 60MPH in 4th gear on level roads.) figure that one out. lol
