starter/components problem. help me!!!

hi this is my first post, i'm glad to be here. hopefully someone has some good advice. this problem started several months ago and has gotten worse. when i turn my key to start the truck with the clutch in i hear the starter click and something click in the dash of the passenger side. today it started for me after a few tries like usually then an hour ago i need to start it again and i couldn't get it to start. this is a 1994 4x4 v6 xtra cab toyota truck. could it be a fuse or relay switch ? hoefully it won't cost to much to fix. please help. thankyou. adam

First thing I would check is battery connections. Corroded terminals will cause the problem. After that, look at your ground connection and connections on the starter.

I have the same problem with my 88 22R-E, a mechanic said it was a loose wire, but didnt say what wire. I guess I'll get it checked out later.

Does the starter crank or just click? The click in the passenger side sounds like the solenoid. Check the battery first with an easy test...turn your key to the point of just BEFORE where you start to hear that clicking sound. Now run the wiper blades for 30 seconds...did they run slower than usual? If so, check for corroded terminals. If they are OK then the battery is too weak and needs replacing. If the wipers worked fine, you must have a starter problem, either a wire short or the entire starter assembly. If you don't see any loose wires, try this test: tap the back of the starter firmly with a hammer and then try to start the vehicle...if it starts, that means the solenoid in the starter gets stuck and you need a new starter. You can replace it yourself quite easily. I would buy a rebuilt one...they are MUCH cheaper and still reliable...I got a top of the line rebuilt for $150 with a ten year warranty.

I had a friend check my starter today and he said that the problem was my starter wasnt engaging. He pulled my battery terminal off, cleaned it with some steel wool, put it back on, and it turned over fine. I dont know if the problem was corrosion or a bad wire, but that seemd to fix it for now.

Whether your starter uses two rectangular types or one rectangular and one crescent you can substitute with two squares or one square and one crescent so any of the above part #'s for those kits will be the right ones,or about half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages would sell aftermarket contacts for only $5 each or the pair.

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.
