Hey guys, I just joined but I've gained plenty of info browsing through here for the past nine months. Now I've found a problem I haven't been able to answer... so I need advice. Anyone who helps gets their name engraved on the inside of my brake rotors...
I have an '87 Longbed 4x4, 216k mile and still running strong - I've had it for nine months with a valid inspection sticker, I just tried to renew it and it failed the smog test - running rich. I ran the codes from the ECU and it was showing "Throttle Position Sensor".
I tested the sensor and the readings were way off... so I replaced it with a new one. I turned the key, cranked the engine, and it it immediately climbed to about 7k and cut out... climbed to 7k and cut out. It just kept racing high, cutting out, catching and racing high again. WTF??
So, I throw the old TPS back on and it is doing the same thing. I go to the boneyard, pull a working ECU, swap it in, and no help.
I am stumped. My next thought was to pull and clean the TB, replace the injectors... and if that doesn't work, bang my head on the valve cover until I can't remember that it doesn't run properly...
This is going to sound horrible, but I had a similar problem with my lawnmower. The problem ended up being a twig jammed in the throttle. I dont know alot, but it sounds like your problem might have something to do with the throttle cable, or possibly the spring on your gas petal.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
When you installed the new TPS sensor, did you go through the proper procedures of adjusting it? Here is a website that takes you through the steps.
1)buy a used one off e-bay
2)some Toyota dealerships may give you one or sell it for $10-20 (used) as most Toyota dealerships don't repair many old Toyotas and no longer need the service manual
3)some public libraries sell their old books as they are not in demand any longer
4)some free buy & sell classified papers, websites and bulletin boards may have some used ones for sale
5)some junk yards may have one laying around
6)some Toyota specialty garages may have one laying around and no longer use it as the vehicle may be too old and those mechanics probably have so much experience that they could publish their own factory service manual with corrections and "real world repair tips"
7)if someone has the FSM maybe they could scan all of the pages and post it on a site for all of us to download or view.

Definetely sounds like your TPS isnt sensing the throttle position correctly. It almost sounds like the TPS is pumping as much fuel as possible into the engine, which causes it to rev that high.

Definitely sounds like it just needs proper adjustment. If it was mis-adjusted before and proper adjusted now, you will need to adjust the idle speed screw to bring down the RPM's. It is the screw located on top of the throttle body chamber.
