Unhappy '90 p/u power loss @speed

I have a '90 3.0L p/u that has massive power loss while
@ speed. It only happens early morning/ late nite after sitting for many hours. Usually I first drive around noon and go home round 2AM. During day it's fine. Freeway 4th and 5th cut out around 65mph, gears NOT slipping just complete loss, sometimes for 10-15 secs then jolts back...continuous. If I put into Neutral during loss, engine dies then pop clutch in 4th and resume problem. Recent new clutch, partial trans rebuild, and catalytic converter. Truck @ dealer now but doesn't look good. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP?!! This seems to surpass my knowledge and I don't want to do guessing replacements.

Do you know haw to pull the Codes to diagnose the problem? If you look at the reply to my post form 8-13-05 at 10:16 JSchad2000 from Sidney, there are urls to several sights that explain the codes and how to jumper the terminals to read the codes. I haven't run the codes on mine yet because its in the shop for a cooloant leak at the intake manifold, but when I get it back I plan to find out why mine does the same thing, except I don't have a manual trans.

Well dealer "thinks" maybe bad head gasket but I told him no guess work, especially for what he wants to charge. Going to give him suggestion of compression test and mention the idea of checking codes.

Ok the dealer found the problem except the part is on national backorder and could take a month or more. I told the mech to check out all the ECU codes and they came up with a faulty SPEED SENSOR. That should be fairly easy to replace w/o much needed knowledge. the sensor was telling engine that it was going 140 when it was really like 70, therefore confusing the ECU and screwing up the air fuel mix and causing the power drop.

Maybe you can find the part on the internet, just because Toyota doesn't have it, doesn't mean its not available. You might try to Google Toyota speed sensor.
I'm glad you you able to find your problem, my mechanic pulled my codes, but there were no error codes.

Phil to look up complete USA inventory of dealerships including Toyota:

http://www.worldparts.com/auto
http://www.partsvoice.com/

These Toyota online dealerships have the best prices in the USA (30% off retail) & probably the whole world:

http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/partscat.html (10% shipping by Fed Ex or free shipping with $100 & over speak to Roger at 1-888-271-3948
http://www.Toyotaparts4U.com
http://www.toyotaofplano.com

more than likely if you type in the Toyota part # at the above links you will find one in stock,I never heard of any part being on national back order for 1 month,I think your mechanics licence or certificate your be backordered for life.

Like I stated in my earlier replies regarding pulling the ECU codes if no codes are found you then:

Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual. This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.

Just askin, but in years prior to 93, is the speed senso in the instrument cluster?? since the speedo is cable driven and all i was curious. The speedo itself, if you remove it from the cluster, has 2 screws in addition to the 2 holding it to the cluster that have electrical straps in the circuit material, just wondering if that could be a potential problem area.
