3.0 valve ?

Just put my 93 t-100 3.0L into the dealer (mistake?) for a check engine light..They are telling me that two of the six valves are down to 3 inches..Specs are 9 to 13 inches...This is all greek to me, I drive it but don't work on it..

They want to either do a full valve/head job at $1500 or adjust the valves as best they can with no guarantee of how long it will run for $450...what to do??? What will happen????

I guess I don't under stand the inches part... Is it the big dealer up-sell? or will the truck run ok/a while withe the adjustment???

Nope no knocking or ticking..Truck is/was running pretty well.

a little missing when it's cold other than that it was only the check engine light being on that was the problem

That's pure bullshit there is nothing wrong with your engine,I have never heard of that remedy for such a problem and I frequent about 60 Toyota 4-Runner/pickup discussion sites everyday I am addicted to them.Your problem of slight miss could be one or serveral spark plug wires having cracked insulation therefore when the engine is cold like cold mornings you have cold climate condensation (water) and the high voltage is jumping from one wire to ground or another wire.
You can pull the ECU codes yourself to verify my claim just read below.

About half of the ECU codes stored on the first & second generation EFI Toyotas don't show a constant blinking check engine light therefore you must pull the ECU codes to see if a fault is registered.

To pull the ECU codes:

All 1980-1995 and including 1995 EFI equipped vehicle allow you to find engine and related faults by pulling the ECU (computer) codes without the need for a handheld OBDII diagnosis scanner, the sites listed below have the fault codes needed to pull the codes and the instructions on how to do it:

http://www.efisakh.narod.ru/at_toyota.htm
http://www.usatransdoctor.com/foreigntoyota.htm

Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual. This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.

You can download the free service manuals below:

Any Public Library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells,Clymers,Bentley and Toyota repair books.

There is also free AutoZone service manuals at:

FSM (factory service manual)can be acquired in several ways:

Toyota Material Distribution Center
750 West Victoria St
Rancho Dominguez/Compton,CA 90220-5538
USA
Ph:1-800-622-2033 (outside CA)(M-F: 7-5 PST)
Ph:1-800-443-7656 (inside CA)
Ph:1-310-818-4630 (in or outside CA)
Speak to Beverly or Deloris
http://techinfo.toyota.com/public/main/mdc.html
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/FSM.shtml

1)buy a used one off e-bay
2)some Toyota dealerships may give you one or sell it for $10-20 (used) as most Toyota dealerships don't repair many old Toyotas and no longer need the service manual
3)some public libraries sell their old books as they are not in demand any longer
4)some free buy & sell classified papers, websites and bulletin boards may have some used ones for sale
5)some junk yards may have one laying around
6)some Toyota specialty garages may have one laying around and no longer use it as the vehicle may be too old and those mechanics probably have so much experience that they could publish their own factory service manual with corrections and "real world repair tips"
7)if someone has the FSM maybe they could scan all of the pages and post it on a site for all of us to download or view.

well the dealer went to adjust valves and said #3#4 valves were sunk so far that they could not adjust..Being non mechanicaly inclined I don't even know how to question them to see if it's bullshit or not..Full head and valve job under way to the tune of at least $1500..Am I getting ripped off?? Do I want the dealer doing this stuff for warranty purposes?? or should I have taken it to my private guy?? Too fucking late now .
see how we go.. THis 3.0 so slow has so far not lived up to the toyota legend..

I want my '88 22re custom cab 4x4 back . Its in the ccity of Guatalajara, deeeep in the bowels of Mexico...Tomas Tierra

Youy always get a second and third opinion again I think they are ripping you off, drop in while they are working on it and watch them and ask them to show you the failed parts,it's your right.

"Well the dealer went to adjust valves and said #3#4 valves were sunk so far that they could not adjust. Being non mechanically inclined."

Hmmm, sounds like you're sucking up the valves. Usually this is the cause of one or more cylinders running too lean. You'll want to figure why this is the case before doing a head job so this problem won't recur again. I had a similar problem with cyl # 3 running too lean (white-ish color spark plug tip) on my 22re. After doing hours of diagnosing, I narrowed it down to the injectors, pulled them and had them cleaned. Fixed the problem.

"Full head and valve job under way to the tune of at least $1500. Am I getting ripped off??"

If this is indeed the problem, then that isn't too bad of a price at all, especially for the dealer. The 3.0 is a royal pain in the ass to work on.

This 3.0 so slow has so far not lived up to the toyota legend."

The Toyota legend is the 22re
