Borrow a timing light from any auto parts store that has a "Loan A Tool Program" and measure your engine base timing it should be 5 degrees BTDC with check engine/check timing connector or 8 degrees BTDC without (I think),just check the emission's sticker inside the hood, the owner's manual or service manual as that would cause engine knocking along with overheating and oil spilling.

Then test for a blown headgasket by performing a compression test then leak down test & finally a fluid analysis test by going to any local Caterpillar dealer and purchasing a fluid analysis kit for $15 (or so) or by heading to your nearby heavy duty repair shops and buying a fluid analysis kit.
There are many methods to bleed the cooling system I usually use all of them to be guaranteed that there are is no more air trapped:

Park the vehicle with the front end up on about 30 degree incline then remove the rad cap and start your rig with the heater control on your dashboard set to red hot then while the engine is warming up turn the heater on and every few minutes cycle the heater control from hot to cold and back. Also turn your rear (4-Runner back seats) heater control from low to high.
I also like to rev the rpms up and down from time to time, once the thermostat opens air bubbles should come out and your coolant level should drop therefore top it up and let the stat open again 10 minutes later while repeating your procedure and make sure your overflow bottle to at least 75% capacity.
After your drive your rig let the engine cool down and recheck your overflow bottle level and refill if necessary to about half way.

Then I would pull the ECU codes, about half of the ECU codes stored on the first & second generation EFI Toyotas don't show a constant blinking check engine light therefore you must pull the ECU codes to see if a fault is registered.

To pull the ECU codes:

All 1980-1995 and including 1995 EFI equipped vehicle allow you to find engine and related faults by pulling the ECU (computer) codes without the need for a handheld OBDII diagnosis scanner, the sites listed below have the fault codes needed to pull the codes and the instructions on how to do it:

http://www.efisakh.narod.ru/at_toyota.htm
http://www.usatransdoctor.com/foreigntoyota.htm

Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual. This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.

You can download the free service manuals below:

Any Public Library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells,Clymers,Bentley and Toyota repair books.

There is also free AutoZone service manuals at:

FSM (factory service manual)can be acquired in several ways:

Toyota Material Distribution Center
750 West Victoria St
Rancho Dominguez/Compton,CA 90220-5538
USA
Ph:1-800-622-2033 (outside CA)(M-F: 7-5 PST)
Ph:1-800-443-7656 (inside CA)
Ph:1-310-818-4630 (in or outside CA)
Speak to Beverly or Deloris
http://techinfo.toyota.com/public/main/mdc.html
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/FSM.shtml

1)buy a used one off e-bay
2)some Toyota dealerships may give you one or sell it for $10-20 (used) as most Toyota dealerships don't repair many old Toyotas and no longer need the service manual
3)some public libraries sell their old books as they are not in demand any longer
4)some free buy & sell classified papers, websites and bulletin boards may have some used ones for sale
5)some junk yards may have one laying around
6)some Toyota specialty garages may have one laying around and no longer use it as the vehicle may be too old and those mechanics probably have so much experience that they could publish their own factory service manual with corrections and "real world repair tips"
7)if someone has the FSM maybe they could scan all of the pages and post it on a site for all of us to download or view.

If engine timing is right on then I suggest removing the valve cover and check to see if the timing chain is installed properly.Carefull don't to loose the half moon valve cover seals both the front and specially the rear. For more info

Finally these sites explain the timing chain replacement well:

eep

earl shieb is the king of quick, shitty paintjobs. why would you let them do mechanical work, or was it in for some serious body repair?

no it was only for paint and some bondo, nothing serious, but we think they fucked with the engine because my mom called bitching and pissed of the manager, but i was thinking it was the timing chain cover and such.

that sucks. if it's really that bad, and you have evidence that they messed with your engine, you could sue them. careful though, some shady shops have developed tricks to get around lawsuits. i had a shady shop do my paint job, and it came out thin and shitty, had some flaws etc. i was lucky that nothing mechanical got f'ed up. about how much did you pay the dude for your paint job?

btw...post some pictures of the paint job and of the messed up stuff, and you can also write about this guy in the feedback:buyers, sellers, vendors section too.

well i called some guy and he said that the power steering pump could be shot and causing the problems. the lowest pulley on the big belt, is loose, such as i can move it with my hands, no problem. and it is part of the engine block. could it be missing a screw? and just need to be tightened? or could it be the timing chain? oh and the entire belt system is not turning, running, whatever.

How would a paint job result in the main pully bolt falling off?
Did they do any work on the motor? I cannot see why they would be under the hood unless they resprayed the engine bay
