Question Lack of power

Hello all . I have just purchased mt first Toyota 4WD it is a 1988 model with a V6 EFI, 5spd. The truck is in excellent condition no rust what so ever and the A/C works like a charm. The only problem I have is it seems like at times it just does not want to go, hesitates real bad and other times it runs fine . It starts right up in the mornings and idles fine I am not sure if it is a fuel issue or ignition issue. I have been told several different things from fuel filter to the throttle body. The young man that owned this truck before did install dual exhaust and remove the Cat. Convertor and I cannot find the O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe, The book shows it to be in the pipe just before the Cat. convertor. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jimmy

Where do we start? First of all, when you say it doesn't want to go, is that from a dead stop? On flat ground? Are there any indicator lamps on your dashboard showing? When it hesitates, does the engine seem to misfire? There are lots of things that can go wrong so the more specific the better. Hesitation makes me think of fuel injection problems or ignition timing problems. when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced and the fuel system cleaned? Maybe it's due. Or maybe the plugs or wires are fouled...

Yes it is from a dead stop on flat ground. The check engine light comes and goes. It does not misfire. I am going to change the fuel filter this weekend, I called the previous owner and he said he has never changed it. It does have a new Dist Cap rotor button & plug wires. Thanks for the reply I will let you know how it works out.

I have had 3 trucks with the 3vze in them, and all had a noticable "flat" spot when cold.

Check these things.

1. Make sure it has NGK or ND plugs. The OEM plugs are ND. Bosch and other plugs work well in other makes but not Toyota.

2. I you suspect a fuel problem, I have had good luck using the Toyota EFI cleaner (part # 00289-1pf14) to clean injectors. There was a TSB to do this after head gaskets on the newer 3vze's.

3. Last, make sure the headgaskets are OK. Toyotas are tough to check, but a hydrocarbon sensing head checker will help.

Hope this helps!!!

Hoof?

why do people keep buying other peoples problems? didnt you drive it before you bought it. could be a zillion things wrong with it.
