93 With little power and poor MPG

I have a 1993 Toyota 4WD Pickup. I do not have a check engine light on, but the 22re engine has little power and is only getting about 15 MPG. I read that some codes can be stored without a light on. Question is when I shorted TE1 and E1 and turned the key on the check engine light just keeps flashing. This is a beutiful truck which my dad bought new. Right now my plans are to change the oxygen sensor and have the injectors cleaned. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated Laigle

What a moronic question.

Could be alot of things...from a clogged converter to a dirty air filter. You basically have 4 things to look at. Which order is up to you.

Air flow
Fuel flow
Spark
Exhaust

The first 3 may just be indicating it needs a good tune up and filters. if it hasn't been tuned up in a while start with the cheap crap first and work your way around to the others.

watch your shit desertguy.

he didn't state whether he had modified the car or not, and things like a lift and bigger tires cause your gas milage to go down. i had no way of knowing whether he knew that or not, so asking is the best way.

my moms 95 avalon started getting poor gas milage, and it turned out the injectors were getting clogged, but like the insert derogatory term here guy said, it could be many things. you could statr out by checking all your fueland air filters and sparkplugs. also, check for gas leaks and plugged fuel lines.

my 92 gets only about 17, but thats with a lift and larger tires, and my driving style. I think that your stock truck should be able to get at least 20. Im no expert in MPG, but it seems reasonable that it could get that.

And yes, Desertguy you need to watch your approach on these forums. You seem to be knowledgable on these trucks, but stop acting like you do sometimes. Nobody wants to take advice from someone acting like an a-hole. JMO

I still have the window sticker from when the person i bought it from bought it brand new. It says for the 22RE 4x4 5 speed...19 mpg City and 22 mpg highway (the average). Heh, it also states the estimated annual fuel cost is $900...Heh man i wish it were the same in 05 as it was in 93. She paid 15,396.00 for this puppy...

Thanks to all. I filled it today and it was 18 MPG. Would not mind the bad gas milage if it had any get up and go, but it will barley keep 70 MPH up hills. I live in Oklahoma so should not be the altitude. Thanks Again

Add nos man lol , just kidding when i 1st bought my truck i got 15MPG on a 95 V6 and ok power and i was using 92 octain, i flush the transmission, diffs, transfer case and used lucas racing oil, rite away i seen a diffrence in the pickup, next i flush the engine 2 times with gunk flush and used QX4 4*4 oil and added a K&N filter and plat 4 plugs, now im getting estimatly 600KMS per tank 50/50 city to hy driving thats 22MPG on a V6, and i havent changed the fuel filter yet its being a pain in the ass, soon im doing a custom electric water pump and electric fan, ignition amplifer with nology wires and hoping to get 25-27MPG and thats without a fuel to air ratio adjustment and a total of 20-25 Hp gain.....oh p.s 65% of the time i didnt take my truck over the speed limit on the HY my RPM was less than 3000 to achieve 22mpg.

Its not a requirement for you to be fond of anyone here. When someone has a problem they're looking for help, not some lame guess from someone who obviously knows nothing. The problem with this forum is 90% of the posts are nothing more than hot air and guesses. Those that are clueless should remain silent, they might just learn something. And, so will everyone else that reads the posts. If most people did a simple google search, before they responded, they would see how stupid their responses are. Example: I just read a post where someone recommends drilling holes in an airbox for more air flow. Pure stupidity...but still posted anyway.

hey i have 2 holes in my airbox well desertguy not everyone is as talented and gifted as you so thats why we join forums so we can learn and share. What fun and use would a forum be without people asking questions? Call me moronic for what i say and do im not going to hate on you i just hope you give me a little respect. You should lighten up. Now rancher you should get some fuel injector cleaner/gas treatment and check your airfilter and fuel filter. For a bit of throttle response clean the Throttle Body with throttle body cleaner that is safe for cats and o2 sensors.
