sounds like you just need to give your AC system a freon treatment.

Kinda what I figured but I thought to ask first. I slightly remember reading about a relay or switch that goes bad and results in the same problem.

If it blows cold air initially and then blows warm air, but the rate of air coiming out is the same, it's unlikely that low refrigerant is the cause. First make sure your A/C hoses have no cracks/leaks, your A/C belt is in good condition and isn't slipping. If it turns warm after driving for a bit, it could just be the A/C compressor switching off so your engine doesn't overheat. Many people assume it's abnormal A/C behavior and try to fix it, but it's normal. It is always possible it could be low refrigerant, or even a stuck expansion valve, but I'd start investigating the other stuff first.

I kinda ruled out a leak because it would have eventually ran dry. What i did find out is there was a recall for the expansion valve. I dont see any stickers on it saying it was fixed, but that doesnt mean anyhting on a 13 year old truck.

basically does it whenever it feels like it. there isn't any consistent pattern. it will stop blowing cold when cruising or at a stop. there isn't any way to nail down when it will happen. today, for instance, i left the house and it was working...10 minutes down the road it started blowing warm. it doesn't appear to happen due to load or vacuum changes either, it could be sitting at an idle and all of a sudden decide to get a bug up its ass and stop blowing cold.

I had the same problem when I got my truck, put freon in, problem solved. Only problem is that the freon my truck uses is banned, so I need to put in a new compressor that uses the new freon.

I had that problem with a Nissan a few years ago. It turned out to be the A/C compressor failing and it was probably low on freon too. I replaced the compressor, receiver dryer and recharged it, it was like new from then on!

*** Just make sure you don't have a leak before you perform all of that. You can inject a dye into the system, run the A/C for a few days, then inspect the pipes & components with a black light, if leaking, the flourescent dye will show. ***

Good luck!
