Question Do you really need a tail pipe?

Hey guys well i got all my parts in(headers and muffler) anyways im wondering do you really need a tail pipe? lots of guys around here run without em and they sound good but my bud put a tailpipe on his truck and its really quiet but he says he can feel better low end torque hes running a delta flow 40 with cat and tailpipe muffler mounted under bed in usual place. Im planning on straight piping to the muffler and none after that. Basicly im asking should i get a tail pipe or it doesnt make a difference?

vehicles need a degree of backpressure.....not to mention the whole legality thing...you should have one nonetheless

why would you spend money on a header and muffler and then scrimp 50 bucks on a tailpipe? Sounds pretty halfassed if you ask me. Anyway, no you won't need the tailpipe. Just straight pipe it as far back as you can, or even run a 90 and run it out the side with a chrome tip.. Might make for nice, and different, personal touch.

I've got a 22R-E and I've had a few exhaust variations...

When I bought the truck, it had a regular cat and muffler on it, but the power steering leaked. I talked to a friend who also owned a 22R at the time, and he said I should do a strait pipe like he had. So one day I went by his house, he grabbed his grinder, and cut the pipe off about 6in after the cat. We started it up, drove it to orileys to get pipes, and GOD DAMN it was loud, and much faster than before. So, we expanded the original exhaust to 2", and ran just a pipe to the end of the bed, sounded the same, but not as loud (which made it possible to listen to my stereo), and it stayed like that for about a year. After that, there was a legal issue, so I had to put a muffler on. I grabbed a GlassPack off ebay for $20 and installed it myself after the elbow I had to make to get over the axel. Once again, sound was the same, but not as loud, which I once again couldnt exactly complain about. But after the glasspack was put on, I stopped backfiring and the backpressure made it dyno 10hp higher after it was isntalled.

i have a 94 2wd p/u with the 22re and i took off my tailpipe before and it seemed to have more pickup and sounded alot better at certain rpm's. otherwise it sounded the same. you do lose some backpressure as mentioned and it isnt probably legal wherever u are but it does look cleaner from the rear. i dont like it its more of a personal oppinion then a necessity.

A lot of states require you to have a tailpipe. Its actually dangerous to not have one. A tailpipe directs the heat away from the truck (and away from the fuel tank) and prevents exhaust from entering the cab (something that could be dangerous if you drive with your rear sliding window open).
I had the exhaust rot off of my F-150 a few months ago and it was VERY LOUD. It made my truck sound like a diesel tractor.

yeah where im from there arent any emmisons or muffler db laws so basicly anything goes down here. As for the tail pipe im thinkin of runnin one straight out the back if cost permits.

Straight pipe with no muffler? Your truck is going to sound like a POS if you do that. At least put a Magnaflow on it.
