Shopping '89-'95 22RE truck...tips?

I'm currently shopping for an '89-'94 22RE 2WD truck...

Besides the basics, I'm wondering if there's anything specific to watch for on these trucks.

I'm somewhat aware of the timing chain issue....do all 22REs need to have their chain replaced at some point? How much does this cost at a typical shop? Is this a potential bargaining chip?

Any other hang-ups? How much should I expect to pay?

Thanks much..

Nick

The timing chain isn't really an issue. Some last the life of the engine and some shit the bed in as little as 100k. Theres really nothing to special to be aware of. If it runs decent and isn't all beat to hell you should be able find one for 1000 or so.

advice

You can kind of hear the chain rattle if its loose, its a bit more noticeable at startup. Realistically if you find an old toy truck in pretty good shape its a bargaining chip to jew the price down because it can be an expensive repair since most mechanics will redo the head gasket at the same time. Check for frame rust, typically it is problematic underneath the cab areas. Some rust is fine, but if it looks really excessive be warned.

they are good trucks and don't have many flaws. in terms of the timing chain, it is a sigle row chain, so it is a little weak, but it will most likely hold up. if it doesn't, just switch to the double row timing chain from a 20r. also, check for exhaust leaks and loose exhaust studs, the older toyota 4bangers have been know to have exhaust leaks, mine (1980 20r, i know its older, but some things still apply) kicked out the 7th exhaust stud (fire wall side) and develope a leak. easy fixes though. i can't think of any major probems with that body style. just watch for rust and high miles.

You can still find these trucks around all the time and they still run great, you can even shop around a bit before buying still.

American motormakers don't have any bragging rights on 4 cylinders like the toy trucks do and they know it.
