20r exhaust expert or oldtimer help

does anyone know if the 20r (1980) was originally intended to run with a traditional gasket? i have heard that it was originally intended to run with the rear heat shield acting as the gasket, and from another source that it runs gaskets on both sides of the heat shield. i already searched and got nothing. thanks for the help.

Yes the heat shield was the gasket . ... you can put the heat shield on , as well as a gasket ..that works . I have done it many times . (many diff trucks)

cool, thanks. i was having an exhaust leak problem from the manifold. took it off, found out that the last shop i took it to didn.t put any gaskets on it, and was just curious since i had heard both stories.
