Considering a purchase

Good Morning,

I've got my eye on a 2001 Tacoma Prerunner SR5, 2WD, 4 cyl. The truck appears to be in good condition with 52K miles. Purchased in California, now located in Ohio. Asking price is 13.5K. Is this a fair price?

What kind of MPG can I expect? 2.7 liter, 4 cyl. The bed has a hard cover.

Owner hasn't done any maintenance other than the Toyota 30K mile scam. Any major concerns with the 2001? I know there were a few recalls, but the owner said his wasn't affected.

Also, can I purchase an extended warranty? This may not be worth the money. I am a current owner of a 93 and have had little touble.

Finally, a CarFax search would be appreciated. VIN 5TESM92N01Z800051. Anyone have access?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

You can check the value of used vehicles at kbb.com or other sites.

On my 4wd 4cyl 2.7 L I get from 19 miles per gallon in the winter to 24 miles per gallon in the summer, depending on kind of driving I do. You might do a teeny bit better without the weight of a cap and 4wd components.

I wouldn't get an extended warranty even if you could. The steps you should take to ensure a reliable vehicle are picking a good make and model (you already did that by picking a Toyota truck) and make sure it has been maintained. I wouldn't call the 30k maintenance a scam; it is money much better spent than on an extended warranty. Did the owner do regular oil changes?

Good luck!

$13,500 is a little bit high, those trucks only cost about $15,000 new.
I havent heard of any major problems with those trucks.
As for milage, Id say that 18-20 is all the more you can expect. It doesnt seem like the PreRunners really get any better milage than the 4x4s do.

Good Afternoon hiwaystar vbmenu_register("postmenu_869357", true); I live outside Zanesville Ohio and yesterday I purchased a 1999 4x4 TRD SR5 with 52,000 miles for $14,500. Truck is in EC. I hope this gives you a referance for your truck hunting. Good Luck

This isn't a great price but I thought it was a fair price.

The owner did do regular oil changes and it appears took care of the truck. Engine compartment is very clean. KBB.COM indicates a value of around 13K (a little less). I have offered close to that and he is strongly cosidering.

Hoping to get around 24 mpg with gas prices the way they are.

Thanks for all your help.

For your sake I hope that Im wrong, but I dont think you will see 24 mpg. I think you will see 20 mpg and MAYBE 22, but Im very doubtfull that you will see 24 mpg on a regular basis.
