clutch problems

Hi, I have a '91 pickup with a clutch problem. Rear wheel drive, 22r engine 167,000 miles. When I let the clutch out sometimes it engages (fully) only an inch off the floor board. There is no travel to ease it into gear. The problem seems to be getting worse. It would occur once in a blue moon but yesterday it seemed to be happening more. It is not safe to drive at this point. The clutch master cylinder is the original. The friction plate and slave cylinder were replaced about a year ago. I suspect an internally leaking master cylinder. How do I check? Any tips? And can the system be bleed threw old fashion pumping? Thanks. Rich.

You are probably right. It sounds like a master cylinder to me.

They are a breeze to change and they just about bleed themselves.

yep, that was the problem. easy to replace.
