trouble diagnosing noise problem

finally got my truck running after months of problems and disappointments, i could list them all, but its too much to list. It does include replacing the timing chain, head gasket and some other things.

But after i got it running the other day and fixing some small leaks, i have this knocking noise. It sounded like it needed a valve adjustment since i did get the head milled and cleaned before i did a head gasket job, so i adjusted the valves about 4 different times with no luck. The last time it did seem to help quiet it down a bit, but maybe thats all in my head. I also adjusted the ignition timing and that also quieted it down some. But the knocking was still there a little bit at idle and it sounded really bad when you moved the throttle while it was sitting in park. Driving it down the road however, it wasnt that bad at all, just sounded like ticking from the valves. I put some sea foam into the crankcase hoping it would free up some lifters or something. I ran it for about an hour yesterday. Today it doesnt sound as bad and i took it for another test drive and like i said before, it barely (if at all) makes the noise when im driving. Just sounds like it needs a valve adjustment. Now, it really doesnt sound bad at idle either. And when i rev it sitting in park, the knocking isnt as bad either. So im wondering if the sea foam is doing its job, or if this is how rods and bearings behaive. My brother told me he thinks its coming from the bottom end, which i dont really WANT to belive, but i know he is probably right. After all the problems ive had with this truck and all the time and money ive put into it, if its going to do this to me, i will be fed up enough to seriously consider turning it into a target for my AK.

So, what do you guys think? Does it sound like bottom end problems, or should i wait it out and drive it a little more? I still have a small ray of hope for the truck (i really want to have a nice running toyota), but i know that my hope might be blown out of the water. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Thanks.

if you think the seafoam quieted it down, then its probably not the bottom end. I think that stuff just stays in the top end and does its work. I could be wrong tho. What year is it? How many miles? if its an older truck with quite a few miles, just run it like it is. You cant expect it to be new again. The only way to get that is get a new truck or put in a new motor. A little valve noise isnt gonna tear appart your motor. If its really loud, yea it might, but if its down to just a ticking, its just the valves. A co-worker of mine is big on VW's, and he said their lifters are just crazy noisy from the factory. He runs a mix of a thicker and thinner (not exactly sure what weights) in his Corrado, and it quiets his lifters alot. That may be a thoguht for your problem. My truck knocks loudly on warm restarts. For about 5 seconds unless you give it gas rite away, and it will calm back down to normal.

my truck is a 92 its got about 180,000 miles on it. I know i could never get it to run new again, i dont expect it to, i just didnt want it to have bottom end problems, which after taking it for another test drive today, i think it does. It also stalled on me a couple of times on the second test drive, once at a stop sign, another right when i pulled back into my driveway. Oh well. I think my brother said he had another motor, ill have to call him and see. BTW, how hard is it to change a motor in these trucks? Im not a beginner when it comes to working on cars, and i have changed a motor before, and done plenty of work on this motor too, so how hard would you say it is compared to doing a timing chain job on a 22re? If its not too hard, maybe ill try it. But something tells me with the amount of suspension parts and the 4wd (not to mention a lot of rust), it might be a pain in the neck.

If you think you have a rod going try pulling off eack spark plug wire one at a time and listen for the knock to go away. If the knock remains its not in the bottom end.

thanks for the tip, desertguy. I think i will try that tomorrow morning. My brother told me to do that to see whats up before i go get the engine. If by some reason im really lucky, and i find out its not the bottom end, i dont think i will have any clue what else it could be. Ive tried adjusting the valves about 5 different times. The clearances had not seemed like they had changed, and ive tried using the recommended gap, ive tried tightening them a little tighter, ive tried it with no slack at all, ive done it hot and cold. Ive also added octane booster to what little gas i had in the truck because i got thinking with the milled head and slightly higher compression, maybe i was detonating, but that didnt seem to fix it. Also playing with the distributor timing didnt help either.

if you decide to change the motor its an easy job and is easiest to pull tranny and all the hardest part is the harness and the shifter bolts are kinda tricky unless you have a ratchet wrench. it can be out and back in in under 6 hours less all the plumbing and such... if its a 5 speed make sure you take the clutch lines loose or youll bust the hydraulic lines. lf you label the vacuum lines it helps but i just went off what i remembered and use the diagram for the rest you can get the diagram on auto zones website its vague but it helps. by the way my toyota had a knock in it after 366,000 miles. it would do it at start up but onceit warmed up it would not. i thought it was bottom end still dont know but ill find out once i get it on the stand. i noticed by retarding my timing it helped a whole lot i did lose power but not too much and it didnt knock at all. it could be a wrist pin worn out or the timing chain is stretched . maby just octane knock with gas being so high id bet that alot of people are watering it down a bit. there are so many variables whan it comes to this situation and its difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without actually hearing it for myself. it even difficult to diagnose by just listening. the test desert guy mentioned might help. if you change motors you might as well just get a remanufactured engine by a decent shop with a good warranty and do the labor yourself ive seen 22r's locally for 995.00 exchange. well worth it considering they will run forever if maintained.
