Engine knock/ping/sound?

Good site.
Need help diagnosing and finding remedy for sound from engine during driving. Sounds like engine knock or ping (I think). Sound like hammer hitting copper plate or something. Happens in all gears (Manual) but ONLY during acceleration point of each gear (i.e. lower RPM band of each gear.
Is this engine knock/ping? If so, any remedies? I have heard higher octance gas may help...
Thanks
Skwerl

It sounds like it. If it just happend recently you may have filled with a bad tank of gas. What octane is recommended? Is it the same that you are running? You may want to consider some cylinder chamber clearer like Sea Foam. Just follow the directions on the can. You may remove some carbon build up that can cause detonation.

You also might want to try a different brand of gas. You might not think it makes a big difference, but some engines just dont like certain brands of gas.
My F-150 runs great on Mobil and BP/Amoco but runs like junk on Citgo and Shell.
My brother's F-250 runs great on Phillips 66 and BP but runs like junk on Mobil.

Cap'n and RAV thanks for the advice.

i was unaware that gas brands could be that different. interesting...
will try the cylinder chamber cleaner (Sea Foam); haven't heard of that stuff before, but will swing by auto store and give it a whirl.

Thanks
