This should help you alot! Cahnge your oil 2-3 times after you get it back together and runnin! Remember to put #1 piston on top dead center on the compression stroke-distributor rotor will be pointing at that spark plug wire post. Make sure when u put the dist. back in it lines up w/that post or it wont run. Dont use a fram oil filter. Go to the dealer and pay 4.50 for a toyota filter. By the way, I've replaced my chain twice, and you do not have to remove the head to change it. Just keep everything clean and good luck!
Here' some tips, if you don't put the crank sprocket on correctly, you will FUBAR your engine, so be careful and RTMFD. Also, make sure NOT to overtighten the top bolt the points to that ground on the timing cover, if you put over 9lbs of torque on it, it will crack the cover. I did it, it sucks. Oil leaks alot. You might consider getting a new head gasket too because if you don't it will probably leak oil when you replace the timing cover, it did for me, and it was a bastard to take it all off again and put RTV for a ghetto rig.
Also, I love the wheels on your truck, where did you get em?

it says i need carb cleaner??? my engine is fuel injected...... why would i need carb cleaner?
That is used as a degreaser/cleaner.87yotaGod, Sorry to hear about your head gasket leaking oil. I rtved mine on both sides(the best I could)and have had no probs either time. Guess its just luck. Just take you're time and if u have to, draw your self a picture of every bolts location when you remove them so you can reinstall them in thier respective places. It took me and my dad about 4hrs to complete from start to finish both times we did it.
Most engine wear on any engine occurs at startup with that said the R series Toyota engines such as the 18R,20R and 22R all use a timing chain which it's tension is supplied by hydraulically driven timing chain tensioner which has it's oil pressure build up few seconds after the engine has started therefore the timing chain rubs on the driver's side brown colored nylon/plastic timing chain dampener or guide and after so many miles (140-170 000 miles in the city with the average 4 starts per day) the driver's side guide breaks through causing the chain to rub on the timing chain cover for the first few seconds upon startup and when driving in 5th gear and letting off the gas.
Usually by this point the other timing components such as the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and chain have their specs out of tolerance and hence must be replaced as well. The tensioner sometimes sticks due to dirt build up and other problems arise as well and must be replaced as well, all of those parts are sold in the aftermarket world as a "timing chain kit" which also include gaskets and a front oil crankshaft seal.Toyota on the other hand for some reason does not sell the parts as a kit but as individual parts which would cost around $400+ and from all of the reading I have done on many Toyota 4-Runner/pickup discussion sites I have come to the conclusion that many experienced off-roaders who cannot afford to buy all of the genuine Toyota timing parts instead buy the chain and tensioner from Toyota and the other parts from aftermarket as a kit but of course don't use the aftermarket chain or tensioner.
The best brand of aftermarket timing chain parts to use on the 20R & 22R series Toyota motors are:
you can also remove the valve cover and take a flashlight and see if the driver's side timing chain dampener or guide wore through.
You can bend 1 to all 8 valves and have timing cover eaten through if you wait and then coolant and oil mix together to give you butterflies in your stomach. You can do a fluid analysis on your engine oil by going to any Caterpillar and buying a fluid analysis kit for around $15-20 and taking a sample of your old oil.
Finally these sites explain the timing chain replacement well:

Get some metal backed guides. I used DOA. There are others available.
I pulled the pitman arm off of the steering box to get clearance to drop the oil pan.
It took heat to get it to let go. The steering linkage moved out of the way nicely.
I don't know about the 4wd situation. If you remove ball joints you will probably disturb front end alignment.
Removong the cross brace under the engine and the pitman arm gave me enough clearance to remove the pan.
I left the head on and had no big trouble. Seal up the joint between the head and the timing cover in a proper manner.
You should use a torque wrench when reassembling. If you don't have one and don't want to put out the bucks, borrow or rent one.
I took the opportunity to roll in new bearings on the main and rods. 365k miles. They were shot.
There are datailed instructions with nice pictures on several sites on the internet.
Don't forget that new distributor o-ring.
The factory parts were about five times as expensive as the aftermarket parts place.
The guides I put in won't fail soon. The cheap chain? I will check the chain every time I adjust the valves.
I wish that I had invested in a two row chain upgrade. I hear that the early 22r can be changed to two row chain by using the two row parts and a different oil pump drive.
does anyone know if the double row timing chain from the 20r can be put on his motor. i would assume so since it can be put in the 22r, but i don't know for sure? Sidney? if i was him i would do that since the 20r timing chain is stronger. btw...sidney, where do you find all these awsone links?

who as I dicussed in the above reply that Ted (engnbldr) has one of the best 20R & 22R series engine parts on the aftermarket but no you cannot use the 20R double row timing chain setup on the 22R series because ther are not enough chain links.
I find these awesome links but reading the 60 or so 4-Runner/pickup discussion sites often then storing the goodies on my hard drive and backing them up on 3.5" floppies.
