Canada 84 Toy carburetor - choke or fuel?

My 84 Toyota, 22R with a carb I just switched out to a unit off a running engine. Seems that when cold it fails to want to shoot that little bit of fuel (my best guess) when kicking the choke in. No sound of it coming in at all, but if primed then it roars to life. The truck was parked for 7 years and had run a couple times in between, but the last year or so of sitting clogged the carb up tight which is why I swapped it out. I have had the carb apart 6 times, changed jets, checked floats (window says 1/2 full always) and even tried tweaking the jets to no better off. It had been acting (when cold) like it was sluggish or missing, but that went away and it sounds normal when turned over cold.

Any ideas on this weird issue would be great.

The carb I replaced was a 35270, and the newer one is a 35292 (but identical from the looks)

thanks

You can check the accelerator pump by removing the air cleaner, opening the choke with your hand and looking down into the carburetor while moving the throttle linkage. If there is no squirt of fuel, the accelerator pump needs fixed. Unless you have done it, I would take the carb apart, clean it well with carburetor cleaner, and put a new rebuild kit into it . If the pump is ok, one possibility is that the choke is not adjusted properly. I don't recall the specified procedure, but I have always adjusted chokes so they just closed when the engine is cold.

Good luck; let us know what you find.

I will try a new AAC pump tomorrow and let you know. It seems that if I rotate the lower lever further than the cam allows, then it does a small squirt.

Could it be that your choke is sticking?

Update

I had to buy an entire kit, so will redo the whole unit right now. I will know in an hour or so if it does the trick.

USA 1984 Carb Rebuild to pass smog

Hey Mike,
Where did you obtain the kit? Was there a carb tag or identification number required to select it ? How much was the kit?

My accelerator pump is inop. My truck has 207K Miles on it and won't start until the venturi supplies the fuel. Lots of cranking... Sluggish performancis the result and of course it failed smog with high HC and CO levels.

bought the kit from Lordco.
it had the replacement acel pump but still not pumping till i manually force the level down further under the hood. May be a float or the other valve is out of whack.
Will see if i can fix it in the next few weeks.
Been too busy fixing the other car.

price for the kit was $60

there is a check valve in the pump circuit...most likely stuck in the casting.
