91 SR5 V6 4x4 1st Gear Problems

My 91 5 speed slips out of 1st gear ocasionally when first starting out, especially under a bit of a load and seems to be getting worse. Man, it's happened a couple of times lately with a real bang out of gear. Owe that hurts when it happens. Typically, I will be loaded up with my trailer & dirt bikes, etc and going to start up a hill and have my hand off the shifter and BANG as is slips out of gear. My truck has about 350Km on it now. It must be a more common problem cause I have a buddy who has this same problem to some extent. Does anybody have any ideas?

the teeth on the dog clutch that hold the gears together are wearing out
Im not sure if your trans is rebuildable or not <--anybody had this done?

t5's that are in chevys and mustangs are easier to just replace the trans cause they're so expensive to rebuild

I'd start looking for a junkyard trans

any advice on replacing the tranny? Is it easiest to drop it out the bottom or? Just after I bought the truck I had to install a used engine and I must say that was a bitch, no wonder they wanted almost $1200 to do the job. I did the job myself, but it was a bitch, not looking forward to pulling it out again. I remember looking at it and thinking that the tranny would be a bitch to get out the bottom as well. So what's best, the bitch at the top, or the bitch at the bottom. lol

Shift lever bushing probably isnt going to have any effect on a trans that pops out of gear. The shift lever does not in any way hold the trans in gear.

interesting though...my buddy claims his only pops out of gear if his hand is resting on the shift lever, if he keeps it off the shifter it does not pop out. if these shift bushings are cheap I may just try that.....nothing ventured, nothing gained.....

resting your hand on the shifter transfers pressure to the shift fork where it can hold the dog clutch at a not-100% engaged position. This wears out the splines on the gear teeth and the dog clutch. When they wear out bad enought there will be nothing you can do to keep the gear engaged when torque is applied to the trans.

I dont exactly know why but it can happen in any gear even if you dont hang on the shifter all the time.

Ill eat a turd if the shifter bushings fixes it.

hahaha! Well I guess I'm willing to try 'bout anything to keep from pulling that engine/tranny again, that sounds like a challenge to me.....I really kind of hope it fixes the problem even though I'm not so sure either......I'll let you know about facing the feces though.....lol
