Well after a horrible 2004 Subaru WRX that I had to get rid of because I couldnt afford it and all its problems anymore, I'm back to a 22R
My first vehicle was an 85 toyota 2wd pickup 22R, 4speed
My 7th vehicle is a 86 toyota 2wd pickup 22R, 4speed
It needs bodywork, and now also a rear diff
I hope to eventually have this truck looking good, low, and going fast
Anyone have any tips on body work on these trucks?
Any tips on lowering the truck, and the purpose I want for this is increased performance, not your usual bumpstop toyota on airbags, I'm looking for a stiffer, better riding, and much better handling performance? Anyone offer coilover setups, or something comparable?
Any tips for as far as increased performance? Eventually I'd like to change it to fuel injection, and build the motor and turbo it. I'd like to have a good amount of power, but until I save up that money, what are some good things to do to make it quicker, and maybe sound better?
As for the body work: fiberglass.
As far as modding it for better handling and more power, good luck on that one. Most people mod those old Toyotas for monster muddin' tires. The 22R was a good, dependable engine but it wasnt powerfull. Stock they are about 90 hp, so its not like you have much of a baseline to work with. They arent exactly known for their racing prowess...

LCEngineering.....try and swap a 22re and put their turbo kit on it. run low compression and push 20 pounds of boost. Put a limited slip in the rear with some good rubber to grab with it and you've got yourself one fast depot runnin' drifter.
I couldn't agree with Captain more on this one! 20 psi on a 22r will push the head gasket out. The head bolts are too long for it. I'd recommend swapping in a v6 to start off, then turbo that.
Thanks for the responses finally, as I need help and want to learn everything I can about the truck
I'm thinking if the block and head is built right, it could sustain about 15psi of boost
Only problem is getting the right parts
as far as lowering the truck, I've read about bilstein shocks, and hear they are good
but how about the springs up front?
and for the rear, just get a lowering block and longer u bolts, or what?
I've been working on the body using fiberglass to fill the rust spots, after they've been cleaned up of course, I'm going to eventually use body filler to smooth it all out
I'm in the middle of fixing the rust now, and stripping the paint
I'm planning on getting rid of some of the lines in the truck to smooth it out and give it a custom look
The truck is hurting right now, but hopefully it will all work out
Anyone ever do a 3sgte swap? That'd be hot
As far as rear diff, I need to get a new one, what should I go with
its a 4speed, so which one do I need to get?
I'm hoping to get a rebuild kit, and possibly an lsd to make it a bit stronger
thanks for all the help

If you want to turbo your engine, thats fine. However, do it right. Make the guts of the engine (pistons, connecting rods, crank) strong enough to handle it.
Toyota did make a 22R-E turbo (22R-TE), but its not as if they just bolted a turbo on a stock 22R-E.

http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20...tech_notes.htm Never said you would only have to run low compression to push 20 pounds...but it can be done. As for the 3sgte swap, that would be sweet but you would run into a lot of space issues since the tranny on em' are side mounted. If you want a swap...go with the 7mgte. A Guy around here has one in an 88' 4x4 and it is sweet as shit...his drivetrain is starting to call it quits though.
I have dropped trucks, cars, ricers you name it but mostly ford trucks. Never have dropped a toyota truck but, if you need any help i can give you some advice. Airbags is the way to go and if money isnt the object get the new quiet ones. They are nice and really reliable. I had a quiet one on my firebird it was great cuz i could get over speed bumps but i have never dropped a toyota truck i always jack em up in the air

Well, I dunno airbags are cool, however I'm afraid that the ride quality and handling will lack
I want better control and handling, I could care less about adjustability
however, if there is an airbag setup that makes your handling great, I'd be interested
As far as turbo-ing the motor it seems as if it'd be alot of work to turbo the carbereuted engine, with having to switch to efi
how hard is an efi conversion, and would I have to do anything internally to the engine? I'd have to get all the sensors, and the ecu also right?
seems like if i could find a longblock 22rte it would be easier, just add a metal headgasket, different turbo, fuel, and engine management and I'd be sitting pretty
I guess the turbo engine had a totally different block and head
what kind of engine management would be optimal, do you guys get by with toyota ecus or do you use a tuner like aem
Thanks for all the help people, I wanna learn all I can about this truck
