Post Towing Harness

Does anyone have experience installing a towing harness for 05 taco? My V6 prerunner did not come with one so I bought the harness kit from Toyota. The instructions told me to route a wire from the front to the driver seat (there is a hole underneath to access the underside) to the back of the truck. But there is already a wire in that hole (for the tail-lights)! The hole only fits one wire with a rubber "plug".

Anyhow, I am planning just to split/splice the existing tail-light wires. The factory job looks clean. What tools do I need to splice it? I heard that there are clips that you can get from auto stores to easily connect wires, but I don't think the factory uses these. Otherwise, the junctions would be so huge.

Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks!

for the cleanest easiest install for most people, most decent auto parts houses should be able to supply you with a direct plug-in harness that just simply plugs/taps into existing Toyota connections. Keeps it simple, clean, and remove for your next Toyota.

VERY WELL PUT!!! I totally agree with Williams! The regular auto parts stores (& on EBAY) sell the harness brand HOPPY that plugs into the factory harnesses. It is very simple, clean and waterproof. The only wire to mount will be the ground wire to the chassis. THey work great for the $40-50 compared to Toyota's $100 harness.

Agree with the above UNLESS your vehicle doesnt have a harness connector for the taillights. My cab and chassis didnt come with taillights, they were added by an aftermarket outfitter.

The thing about toyotas is they use seperate wires for brake lights and turn signals. Trailer harnesses require the left turn signal to be combined with the left brake light, etc.

Anyhow murrays sells a $12 converter which combines the trucks wires into a 4 wire trailer harness.
