Rear wheel bearing

84 2wd 7.5in long bed
I'm going thru the rear end and I need some advice.
The rear axle bearings are not tight in the housings. They slide in and out freely.
If they aren't pushed out perfectly straight they bind, so it is not a super loose fit.
The book says press out the bearings. They aren't sloppy just not a press fit.
The book also says how to replace the bearing carrier 'If it is worn or damaged.'
Must be worn if it isn't a press fit. But is it going to cause me any trouble if left alone?
Maybe 'knurl' the inner surface? Haven't tried the new bearings yet, could be they are a tighter fit.
What say you?
Thanks for any advice.
