No need for fuel filter replacement?

I just got off the phone with the service department at my local Toyota dealer. I asked how much the labor would be to replace a fuel filter on my '93. I was told that Toyota does not even recommend replacing them, that they should last the lifetime of the engine. Seems strange to me but does make the ridiculous placement make sense. I know I had one on my old '84 get clogged and it left me on the side of the road. Anyone else hear this? Anyone ever have one clog up on them?

They probably didnt want to have the hassle of putting in a new one for you or something stupid like that, and so they just told you that it doesnt need it. I dont see how it could hurt the truck by replacing the original filter after all the years. Id say jsut go and do it jsut for piece of mind. It cant hurt. JMO

It sure hurt my neck when I tried to do it myself. I can't get to it laying on my back. They want $68 which is worth it to me. I'm waiting to see what people say on here.

I've never waited for one to clog up... but someday it will. Until then, it will slowly lower the pressure in the fuel system.

When I bought my Tacoma used with 83,000 miles, I immediately changed the fuel filter. On a 2000 with a V6 it's located in a very convenient place under the cab, so it was easy to install. The OEM Toyota filter came complete with the mounting bracket, so I didn't even have to mess with moving the bracket from the old one to the new one.

If I remember correctly, the filter cost me about $35 at the dealer. $68 installed isn't bad at all.

Normally they never need to be replaced as they are top quality just like the rest of Toyota parts "but" if the gas tank was somewhat low on gasoline and the gas tank was shaken (off-road or a sudden swirf or stop) then the soot, rust and other debris on the botton would have got into the plastic re-usable (washable) fuel pump filter and into the fuel filter (disposable).
So If you truck acceletates smoothly with no fuel starvation symptons specially when climbing steep hills or under heavy loads then just lower your fuel tank and flush it out.Just unscrew all 3 steel fuel lines from the fuel pump bracket before you lower the gas tank.if replacing the fuel filter make sure the engine is completely cold and do not use those open lamp/bulb lightning system which may cause fire if the gas under pressure shoots at the light.
