Who Knows?

I have an 82 4x4 shortbed with 217,000 miles, all original drivetrain except for a Centerforce clutch that I installed after purchsing the truck which had been sitting for 2 years from the original owner. It fired right up after giving her some fresh gas and a battery, then sat for another year. This spring I got her going again and threw on a 5" susp.,35" M.T. baja claws for good measure. And of course new plugs, cap, rotor, wires, belts, hoses, thermostat, and fuel filter.Custom bumpers, sliders and even steering wheel. On about my 3rd wheelin' adventure,as I got to the top of the mountain, the truck just died!I limped down because the the truck would run if it was given gas but would not idle.It was a rough trip down not being able to creep over obstacles.Ever since it will not idle or idles rough, then dies.I rebuilt the carb, new fuel filter, checked and checked the timing, and hoses.Removed the cat and still smells like sulfur(forgot to mention that).Tightened the manifold.Checked plugs and they were white at tips indicating a lean mix and that does not go away no matter what i do.After all this it will not idle or will idle rough then die. However, if you give it gas,it will run, but with a lope. There is also a hollow, hissing noise coming from the carb.My dad thinks it is emmisions related,my friend thinks it is the head gasket, and another friend suggest replacing the carb with a Weber 32/36 and getting rid of all emmisions since we have no regulations in Vail. Also it is not a daily driver.Who knows?

You may want to check the carb gasket. A leak here will cause your problem.

Check your electrical wires to your carb. I had a problem where it would run if you gave it gas but would die and not idle. Went throu everything and checked my wires and found that one had brocken that goes to the carb. Replaced it and have had no problems.

The hissing sound is your problem....vacuum leak. This is why it's running lean and your spark pugs are white. Remove and inspect EVERY vacuum hose you can find. To check for vacuum leaks around the base of the carb and intake manifold gasket, get a can of carb cleaner and spray the hell out of all of those areas with the motor running. If you hear an increase or decrease in RPM's, you have found a vacuum leak. Another area that is prone to a vacuum leak is the vacuum advance diaphragm(s). You can check it by using a vacuum pump on or just suck on the hose leading to the diaphragm (or diaphragms if you have dual a dual diaphragm setup). It/they should hold vacuum. The inner diaphragm is common to leaking on dual diaphragm setups.
