22R / RE Cylinder head question

I need to get yet another head.
My head was pitted and cracked between valves so I searched for a head and found one. Had it checked at a machine shop and installed it. The timign chain went on real hard and after gettign the motor back together and asking questions about the timing chain I found I have a pre-85 head and it cannot be used with my 87 block. Went back to the machine shop to plane the head down and the guy there said he would do it but would not trust that an air chanel would be about .020" thick.

I am now in search of another head. Can a 22RE head be used in place of a 22R head. I have a carbed motor and want to know if I find a Fuel Injected motor can I use that head??????

Thank you.

And I have a good tested early(pre 85) 22R head for sale

The 22R-E is 1cc bigger and requires the use of 90 octane fuel (minimum). With the price of fuel nowdays, do you really want to be buying 93 octane fuel all the time?
Id try to find a set of remanufactured heads.

1cc smaller, you mean, lol.(assuming you're talking about compression)
Check this site out, do some measuring to see what you've exactly got.http://www.lcengineering.com/TechNotes/TechNote48.htm If the cyl. head has pear(or kidney) shaped exhaust ports, it CAN BE USED in your application. The timing chain needs to be a 96 link.

Thankyou
I read that site and that page is what I brough to the machine shop to plane down the early 22R head and how we came up with the fact that it would make the air tube paper thin and not trust a planend down early 22R head.

I just thought & figured that the 85+ heads were the same with the exception of the EFI having a block off plate or somthing over where the mechanical fuel pump would go. I didn't think they would manufacture 2 completly differant heads for the same motor. But it is a car company and thay do just about anything that dosen't make a whole lot of sence.

Also according to LCE tech page the 81-84 22R head has more CC than the 85-95 head but the turbo head has the same CC rating at the 81-84 head. IT does not mention an EFI head unless I need to assume the turbo head is used on all EFI models with or w/o a turbo??????

As for a remanned head I can get one for $380 but can't afford that. I have a lead on some at a salvage yard for $75. I just need to knwo if I can take any from the correct year or if I have to pass on the EFI ones.
