3.4 questions

What is the history on the 3.4 found in tacomas. Is this a relatively new motor for toyota or a newer version of an older motor or a lexus motor? Is it known for typical toyota toughness and longetivity like the other motors? I just purchased a truck with one and was curious just what to expect...my toyota experience is limited until now and this is one unusual looking motor...tiny little plug wires and where the hell is the distributor?...lol.. I'm used to GM products and this 3.4, while probably being superior, is one goofy looking motor. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

One of the best 'Yota motors you can get for a V6. It's been around for quite some time, can't tell you exactly how long, but it's a tried and true motor. It can easily go 300K with regular maintenance. No distributor to worry about, just 3 coil packs on the passenger side. A little under powered (IMHO) for a V6, but good enough for my daily driver.

The 3.4L is a good motor. It doesnt have anywhere near as many problems as the 3.0L had.
I havent heard of anyone here on TN having that many problems with their 3.4L and a lot of people with older Toyotas drop 3.4Ls in their trucks and SUVs because its an easy way to gain some power.
As Humanoid said, no distributor. Youre right, its not like a GM engine and as far as Im concerned thats a VERY good thing!

They had a headgasket recall like the 3VZE used in about 30-40% of the 1988-95 4-Runners & pickups see the middle & bottom links for the actual Toyota service bulletin recall notices:
