that's just a baseless statement. You assume that quality had to do with the fact that it's not in production any more. Instead, it was most likely the demand for a turbo engine. The majority of the engine (at least the parts that make the 22r/re strong, are similar to the 22rte. A cast iron block that can withstand 1100 hp? sounds like a dog!! lol.
If you don't have one, don't knock it. Mine's got 240K miles on it, runs mint, hauls ass, and purrs like a turbo charged kitten. I even rode in a 22re last weekend that had the turbo conversion running 17psi boost. While it was nice, It was pretty close to my 22rte stock levels.
22rte rules!!

also...the 22r/re isn't in production any more either....but most agree that it's indestructable and awesome. Toyota as a company makes good and bad decisions. Here's an example.. Good corporate "profit" decision = Tacoma. Bad corporate PR decision = Tacoma. Horrible product quality decision = Tacoma.
The fact that superior engine builders (DOA, LC, ENGNBLDR, etc) all make 22r/re/rte engines to this day means that they are badass. Period.

It may have been good, but not good enough to keep in production.
Doesn't sound much like an opinion...but instead a statement. Add a "possibly"..or a "Probably" in there, and you have your opinion.
But i hear what you're saying.
kinda funny though that in your first post you call the 22r's and 22re's "Great"....but my 22RTE is "not good enough".
if you knew the similarities and differences between these engines, you'd understand the irony of that statement.

Do you or I make the corporate decisions for Toyota? I'm not being snotty about this, seriously, even though the interweb is notorious for that kind of crap....
But what I was implying is that IF the 22RTE, along with other great engines, was really THAT great (meaning huge sellers -> $$$ for Toyota, that's what I mean by "not good enough"), then it would still be in production. The average person knows precious little about turbochargers, let alone how to maintain the vehicle, such as idling before shutdown, etc. So in saying that the 22R/RE's are great, it is with reference to their long-lived success in general. The 22RTE's, although a good engine (as you know), in Toyota's eyes were not successful enough to continue their production.
I can see by your sig that you have a passion (or a deep wallet) for the RTE, not everyone can do that.
my bad. I guess i thought the thread was about the "best" engines...and not the most profitable or user friendly.
Yes i do have a specific liking to the 22rte. I have 2 of them... both 21 years old, and they're still amazing workhorses and performers. Indistructable if treated right. Like with any vehicle, you have to know how to treat the engine. To some, changing the oil is a mystery... and if not done, their engine dies. Doesn't mean the engine was to blame. With turbos (any turbo'd vehicle), you have to let the oil in the turbo cool down after a drive in order to prolong the life of the turbine. Simple stuff. Volvo, Saab & Audi seem to have no problem with selling turbo engines...and in reality, Turbo chargers are only a "mystery" to most in the USA. Europe is flooded with these engines. Not suprisingly, the average full sized truck engine in Europe is around 2.4L. Smaller engines assisted by turbo chargers. And these engines sell amazingly well and run for a long long time.
In my mind, user error, or profitability has nothing to do with the quality and performance of an engine.
Regarding the expenses...i do get kinda obsessed with the truck... but i also do all my own work on my truck...which saves tons of money. (Example: $88 for a timing cover, Chain, tensioner, guide swap... vs $1200 at a shop with labor.) Plus, ebay, scrap yards, and bartering (my favorite method) help obtain parts. When it's all said and done, it may seem like i've dropped a ton of cash...but really haven't.
