I travel back and forth to Mexico allot and the Hilux is outselling the Tacoma and Tundras down in Mexico. Unfortunately, the diesel engine is not available for any North American market, including Mexico. I hear that in the near future it will be very easy for Mexicans to buy cars in America and Vise versa. Hopefully by then the turbo diesel will be in Mexico so I can get one. Why do you think Toyota doesn't bring the engine so many people want to North America?
Couple reasons, the North American refinery system couldn't handle the increased demand for diesel if there were an increase in # of passenger vehicles requiring that fuel. The diesel production is near peak now and it is all required for transport/industry.
This might just be a conspiracy theory, but the big 3 don't want anyone else to be able to sell diesel trucks or their sales #'s will actually disappear.
I'm no expert, so if I'm out in left field chime in.
So dang frustrating. The Hilux gets locking glove compartment, handle operated e-brake, MANUAL SHIFT TRANSFER CASE, heated rear window, locked fuel door (granted it won't stop a determined thief), more storage under the front seats and mud flaps that aren't 3 feet long and breakable!
Never mind something kick-ass like the diesel. Why don't we even get these little things? What do our trucks have that people around the world would drool over?? Some TRD stickers!!
That front bumper from the Hilux has to go, our front end looks better (IMO) and I like our dash cluster.

Good point but the diesels are coming. By 2010 Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, and Dodge will all have light duty diesels in their 1/2 ton trucks. Mercedes and Honda will also have diesels avaliable in their passenger cars. Ther are many others, I would have to go back and do a search to name them all. I have a feeling diesel prices will continue to outpace gas prices as these new diesels come to the market.
Mercedes has had diesel in passenger cars for years and years. Volkswagon has diesel in at least the Jetta that I am aware of.

I agree there are plenty of diesel passenger vehicles in NA now, but if a greater percentage of vehicles were to operate on diesel right now, the refineries could not handle the production necessary to fuel them. I believe that refineries are re-tooling to produce more diesel fuel from the raw crude oil currently. Also the demand for gasoline is so high that we can't currently take a chunk of that crude away from gasoline production to make diesel. It would result in shortage of gasoline supply. And yes, we can expect all those big oil companies to pass the cost of all this on to us. So diesel prices will continue to climb, but this is the world we live in and I'd still rather have a diesel Taco than what I've got now.
