I have been to Thailand and actually drove a Toyota pick up with a diesel. I sure would love it if toyota started bringing a few to the states. It had power and acceleration, and it was quiet..... The best part of all it didn't smoke like a bandit if you jumped on the throttle.
Please toyota make my dream come true for 09...
Chances are the pics would look just like every other Hi-Lux. Our Tacoma and the Hi-Lux everyone else gets, are both derived from the same platform and have much in common. They are NOT identical, however. The Hi-Lux has a unique transfer case and some differences in suspension. Using Urea NOx reduction, it wouldn't take much to sell the 160-180hp 3l 4cyl offered in the high-end Hi-Lux.

The Hilux also has a fully boxed frame, beefy leaf springs and a metal bed. IMO the Tacoma is better looking though.
I'm at work now in Africa with diesel Toyotas all around me, I drive one every day when I'm here. We have Toyota & Nissan diesels, trucks & SUV's. All the Toyota Hilux (Tacoma in the states) here are 4 door, 5 speed, 4X4, diesels. Awesome trucks!!
I saw a crewcab Hilux the other day (not sure if it was diesel though) from probably Mexico. I had to look twice, cause it looked "familiar" but differen't...Ours are, IMO, better looking....

Here is an earlier reply of mine to someone else that shows many Toyota diesel trucks and 4-Runners for sale in USA & Canada:
The way the price of gasoline (petrol for Australians) is going I suggest that everyone convert their Toyotas to diesel as they are more:
fuel efficient
higher torque
waterproof
simpler
reliable
safer
can idle all day long
less overheat episodes
can burn bio diesel or vegetable oil (without glycerin)
Well to help everyone dismiss the myth that Toyota diesel pickups & SUV's are rare in USA & Canada I have included below a list of very resourcefull links that contain places to buy diesel engines/parts and complete rigs.

This is a great video from Top Gear featuring a 1985 Toyota 2L Hilux diesel that is put through some astonishing torture tests in an attempt to "break it".
The HiLux case is a manual shift unit, for starters. I'm not certain about the other details. It still is a chain type case, and part-time. I don't know if the HiLux uses the same ADD system as the US market trucks do.
i have been searching for a while for a diesel toyota pickup here in the north east. but to no avail. i checked many of the links above but coudnt find any listed in classifieds.
are there any for sale sites specific to hi-lux or diesel pickups here in the us?
Anyone ever herd of someone going down to panama or any other central/south american countries and buying a hilux and just driving it up into the US or Canada? i know that to import them from japan they have to be 15 yrs old here in Canada, but i have herd a few stories of people importing them through central america. I am thinking of trying this myself, i know it would cost a few grand to get a hilux DOT cert but i think would be worth it in the end, to have the only vehicle to make it to the north pole!!! Dam Top Gear has made me fall in love with this truck
