Question for the electricians here.

I need to do a run for an electrical dryer. The run is about 30', dryer is rated for a 30 amp circuit using 10awg wire. I have some 8 awg wire laying around and I'm pretty sure it wont hurt but want to make sure it wont be an issue to screw down on the breaker or anything else.

No, problem, go ahead and use the #8, just make sure its a 3 wire RED, BLACK, WHITE and, a bare or, GREEN............(updated code states the use of 4 prong outlet.)
