Just got my Nikon d40 with the 18-55mm lens. Here are some of my 1st night photos with it. I had a crapy point and shoot for a year and HATED IT. I know some of you are Canon people but honestly, I like the way this feels and I like some of the settings it has that Canon lags on. I KNOW, Canon also has other setting's that Nikon lags on but I prefer Nikon. I was at Sammy's Camera and a worker told me "friends don't let friends shoot Canon." Found that kind of funny. Well here they are, let me know what you think.
They were all taken around 1-am and the camera was on M mode, if anyone cares.

HHAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT. I really admire your spirit Canon guys.
Thanks for the positive feed back. I am new to the SLR game so when I take better photos ill post them up. I am driving out to Flagstaff AZ, on Monday and the weather out there should be beautiful. I will make sure to take some good photos and post them up when I get back. Does anyone on here live in Flagstaff? I just got accepted to NAU and I am going out there to just check it out. I heard that there are a bunch of places to go trail riding. Thats a major plus.
Anyone have any input on what type of lens would be good for LONG time exposure of the sky, for like an hour +?

I'm an aviation person. I usually shoot around Long Beach Airport or various airshows. Today I was at LAX. Well see how the airport background will work out with my new truck. Took a few good ones of my tC there and at car club meets. I'm not sure if there are local taco clubs around. Scion owners are into the club/show scene.
Laguna Top of the World/Alta Laguna, HB wetlands, over on the bluff at the top of Seapoint, ...better stop giving away my areas of interest.
Hell, take that truck into the wild. Joshua Tree and do some all night exposures and get the stars as the earth turns.
That would be awesome. Maybe I'll do just that when I get my new taco

Good choice of camera! I almost have enough saved for my Nikon D80.
Those star pics rock!
Do it! I got the D80 this summer and it's sick. I wanted the D80 over the D40 because it has better Auto-focus and Light meter chips and I take a lot of pictures in the dark usually in the Theatre.
To OP: Enjoy your D40! Awesome Pictures! You wont regret the choice of Nikon over Canon I promise you! The Canon's are nice but the Nikon F-Mount lens is the most popular and versatile lens mount around. You will find no shortage of attachments and lenses for your Nikon if you want to get more complex later on. Definitely the way to go!
Here are some of my pictures!
Was bored at work.
I did Lighting Design for this Show last Semester.

You need to start fiddling around with your fStop, iso and White balance. Those pictures have some room for improvement.
Was that to me?
Those pictures are not the best I've taken, just a few of what I had uploaded already. They haven't been put through Photoshop at all yet and they were taken in full manual mode with ISO 800. They are actually white balanced and are true to what the stage looked like at the time of the photo. It's a theatrical performance the colors are not supposed to be true to life. I know they are also fuzzy...but you try taking pictures of moving action without a tripod at ISO 800 with no flash in low light with your FStop wide open and still being forced to take pictures at 1/60th or slower shutter speed. I'd say they came out pretty good. I can't use a flash because it would wash out the lighting, I'm a lighting designer and I need these photo's for my portfolio so I can't have the lighting look all washed out.
