Oh why are people such scum

Hey everyone,

I am a full time college student and I live at school, well today I went out to my truck to go to work and the first thing I notice are some big long key marks down the side of the truck. I cant afford to bring it to a body shop to have it fixed, and I dont want to report it to insurance cause that will raise my rate. The idea I have to fix it was to buy some single stage paint and apply it to the scratches, once the paint was dry I wanted to wet sand the area and wax it. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as to whether or not it would work? I wouldnt want to do it then have big lines down the side of the truck were you can see the new paint.

thanks for any help

1- You could leave it alone. Its doubtful that those scratches are down to the metal and will rust.

2- Wax/ buff the scratched areas, then apply a touch up paint (how big is the marks).
Don't expect the single stage paint to last that long!

3- If its really keyed, I doubt fillers/scratch-x will be of much help..

You could take this to the detail section for further suggestions.

First of all, that sucks really bad, dood, I feel bad for you.

I bet if you were to sand it down and do all the prep work yourself it wouldn't cost a lot more than a couple hundred bucks to get a body shop to spray it for you. You could even spray it yourself at one of those booths that you rent (if you feel confident in doing that). IDK, how bad is the damage? It all depends on whether you feel it is worthy of investing a few hundred dollars in.

And with youre insurance, if you have coverage for your truck (meaning more than just liability) it seems like this is the time to use it (since you didn't cause the damage). But they still might raise your rates, it's hard to say. I got in a wreck and they still haven't raised mine (waiting to see what will happen). I wonder if it is even possible to call and ask what the repercutions (sp) of filing a claim would be.

Other than that, touch up paint and buffing are probably the best you're going to do. What color is your paint? It depends how bad the damage is, but Scratch X and stuff like that (like desentrix said) don't really even work that well in the first place, much less on big scratches.

I don't have much in the way of money either, but if I were you I would put away as much as you can for the next few months (do you work?) and then get it painted. But I couldn't live with a huge scratch like that (my fenders are already bent and my grill is cracked, lol). But it's up to you, depends on how massively important it is to you.

Good luck, dood.

Read your insurance policy. Some companies only raise rates on chargeable accidents, which may be when the car is moving or the damage is over a certain dollar amount.

Give em a call, you never know. I totaled my 04 and it cost geico $23,000. They didn't raise my rate on the 06 I picked up a few days later.
But like someone else said If you do the prep work the painting would likely be less than your detuctable if you have a $500 one like most.

I know how you feel. I hate people in general Such ass holes.

I don't think they can raise your rates because you are the victim of vandalism.

You would think so but I have heard of a couple people who were victims of that but their rates were raised. A good friend of mine had her windshield smashed in by some scum. She turned it into her insurance and they paid the claim. A month later they raised her rates. Sucks!
