I am new to the forums and new to Toyota. I just bought a 08' taco in Ga. last weekend. Felt like I got a great deal ($5,500 under sticker) but looks like I got screwed on the ext. warranty. I paid $1700 for a 5yr 100k mile platinum $0 deductible warranty. Should of paid more attention but noticed once I was home the warranty was through fidelity warranty service which through some research I found that in Georgia Toyota does not offer a ext. warranty through Toyota Fin. Upon finding this website I noticed the great deal on Toyota factory ext. warranty's. I am thinking about canceling the warranty and buying one from the guy everyone recommends on these forums. $880 sounds better that $1,700. My only concern is that dealerships in Tennessee and Georgia will honor a warranty through Toyota fin. since they don't offer them in the southeast. Thanks and advance and I look forward to being a member of such a great forum.
I don't know the details...but if *TOYOTA* offered this warrantee to you at the purchase of your vehicle - regardless of the warrantee company - that you should be covered for the conditions of the warrantee regardless (unlike other aftermarket warrantees).
But I will agree... $1700 is a lot especially if someone else at another dealership is offering it for $800.
I guess I'm looking at the warrantee like its an insurance policy. The warrantee might be treated like an insurance policy where Toyota contracts outside companies to manage the financial aspects of the warrantee itself. As long as you got the warrantee from a Toyota dealer - then it should be legit.
Just make sure you get ALL the details about coverage. If you decided to drop the $1700 warrantee for the $800 one....make sure you're getting all the same coverage. Read the fine print....as the coverages could be different.
Or ....get a Quote from Troy ($800 warrantee) and take it into your dealership and show them the quote. See how they respond..... They might pinpoint some differences in the coverages OR perhaps offer you a partial refund of your $1700 if you threaten to cancel.
Dont7 when I purchased my 08 Tacoma the dealer tried to sell me the extended warranty. When I asked him how much it would raise my payments he said "about $3.00 more a month" so without thinking I said sure why not. When I was signing the loan documents I asked the finance manager how much my payments would be WITHOUT the extended warranty, she said without the extended warranty my monthly payments would drop by $20.00 a month. I told her I changed my mind and I didn't want the warranty after all. You could tell she wasn't happy, she shredded up the documents and had to print new ones up.
You might want to call the dealer and see if you can cancel the extended warranty, Im not sure if they'll do it or not but it's worth a shot.

CANCEL the warranty!! Read any papers they gave you about the ext warranty at the dealership or wait until a warranty packet comes in the mail, it should tell you how to cancel the warranty (it'll be small print so read carefully). Here in California we get 60 days to cancel for a full refund, otherwise they pro-rate. I added mine on at the dealership 'cause the finance guy knocked off 3% off my interest rate. When I got the warranty packet in the mail, I wrote a letter saying I'd like to cancel, signed it, dated it, and sent it along with the packet back to the "Administrator" address that the cancel instructions stated. If you DO want to get ext warranty, and it would make you feel more secure to do so, wait some time (you've got factory warranty for 36k powertrain and 60k bumper-bumper), save some dough, and try to get that $880 warranty later. I would NOT get any ext warranty, save that $$$ put it in the bank and let it earn you some interest!!!

I dunno...just throwing ideas out there.
Janster, it appears to me that you do not understand the difference between "Toyota" (as in the company that makes and stands behind our trucks) and a dealership. The dealership can sell you a Cafe Mocha for $50, but I doubt that it's backed by Toyota (the company that .... not the Toyota dealership). Huge difference.
A third party warranty for $1,700 is certainly a huge waste of money.

good luck.
As true as it gets. For sure over the long term. Nobody offeres extended warranties to make things cheaper for you, right?!?! Just skip it and save up!

How exactly, do you know it's a *cafe mocha* policy? Like I mentioned - Toyota might be contracting the warrantee's out to cafe mocha companies....but the coverage should be legit to Toyota's written extended warrantee coverage (if that's the case). And still fully supported by Toyota.
If the dealership is trying to sell you a non-Toyota supported warrantee - then I would think they are legally required to disclose that it's NOT a Toyota supported factory extended warrantee.
When I bought my truck, the dealer tried to offer me a 60 month, 70k mile warranty for $2300. Saying that Toyotas are known to break down at the 30k mile mark. Needless to say I couldn't help but laugh and I'm sure I made him mad by knowing what I was talking about. Thus the reason I hate dealers. They try and scare you into believing that you absolutely need to have it and you end up not having to use it.
Cancel it. All US Toyota dealerships will honor the warranty from Troy. Don't let the dealership BS you. A genuine Toyota warranty trumps all other warranties, no matter what state or city they're in. They'll honor it, or they'll get sued.

+1, it's kinda like extra insurance on a rental car, if it wasn't profitable for them, they wouldn't sell it. So basically, they take in more money selling these things, then they dish out to fix cars. Go with the percentages and save your money.

In my case insurance on the rental is a very good investment. I tend to be very hard on them.. Even made a few laps around Sears Point in one back in the day. Absolutely melted the brakes. My team mates and I would bump draft on the freeway, jump curbs, basically all kinds of stupid stunts. There have been several times where I have left the rental agency a big steaming pile that used to be a car. Toss them the keys and move on out. Other than that, yes it's a money making rip.
