Another active thread on here today got me thinking...I have no idea what would happen if I damaged my truck off-roading. I'm reluctant to call the insurance company to ask them since then I'm pretty much admitting that I do go off-roading. In general do policies have exclusions or is it just assumed that a 4x4 will be taken off-road?
Guess I could get the magnifying glass and read through the policy

I don't think they can drop you or anything like that. A friend wrecked his bed on a trail and had insurance pay for it, and finally he rolled the thing, totaling it. That was also covered. And this was in Mass, which isn't exactly a fun state to buy insurance in (though this has changed I guess). Granted I'm sure he weeps each month when the insurance bill comes around....
I offroad all the time, live in the woods, hunt weekly/daily but in some cases, if i was the insurance agency, I wouldnt cover some people for some of the things they do. I personally wouldnt cover me for the some of the things I do, ok most of the things...Seriously there are some stupid people out there like me and its pretty funny when we are covered for doing some of the stupid things we do.
Whether or not they will cover it, they will get the money back from you through increased premiums. And you'll probably pay above and beyond what the repair cost was. That's why I dropped full coverage a while back. I have liability and comprehensive, and that will do. I consider myself low risk, and therefor I am trying to avaoid paying for other peoples mistakes as much as I can.

Yeah exactly. They will screw you one way or another. I suppose thats why you pay them all that money so that if something like rolling your Taco happens then it will be covered, at least partially....

If I break it, then I will pay for fixing it. The chances of me paying more this way are very slim. One of the biggest rip offs IMO is that your full coverage does not drop in cost as the vehicle gets older, even though the replacement value drops significantly. I drive cars for around 10 years before replacing them, and paying for full coverage only subsidizes (sp?) those who get a new car every 3 years and pay the same. I have paid my share in full coverage premiums during the 20 years of driving, and I am sure that if I would have invested all that money I could pay for a new Tacoma outright by now and still have money left over. I have never had a claim against my colision policy over those 20 years, btw!

most of the stuff I break offroading I fix myself. Busted bumpers, scraped rims, etc. Small time shit basically. Other stuff, like my transmission, gets covered by warranty. Insurance doesnt come into the picture unless you've done some hardcore shit and need to replaced hella panels or something.
As long as you stick to the trails you should be alright. If you dont, you'll be repainting panels every week like me.

Yep, that's exactly why I dropped mine. Nothing against you, but I was kinda getting sick of paying for other people .....

The only flaw in the "If I break it I fix it logic" is what if you get hit by another vehicle and they won't claim fault? I've got full coverage for a reason. Guy that hit me won't fess up so even though I had to pay my
deductible to get my truck back, it was better than paying the 5k in
damage he did to it.
Same thing happened to my old truck when I got rear ended as well, although that went under my uninsured, but I was happy that I had it.

is it my ignorance, or don't the police determine "fault" based on their interpretation of what happened to cause the accident and the laws governing your state?

Depends on if the police are called or not. Unfortunately for me I left the house on a quick errand before work in the morning and left my cell at home. It also happened in a private parking lot and there were no injuries so in my haste to just get my errands done and get to work I didn't bother with it. So now it's up to the insurance companies to decide who's at fault based on statements by the two parties.
