Hi. Is the automatic transmission as good as the manual transmission on the 2008s or any year tacoma? I'm looking for input here. Never had a automatic.
I'm in the buyback program and i have had a knee replacement on my left knee, so i'm looking at both. my thinking is the auto may be better for me now but i love a stick!
I would go with a V6 4,0 liter. Input please. Thanks, Bandit190
I test drove both & opted for the auto. My left knee is toast (degenrative arthritis & future knee replacement). I decided I had enough shifting even tho as you said a stick is what its at. I would definitely take one on an extended test drive, maybe explain your situation to the sales guy, they might let you take it longer. Take in consideration your needs, type of driving, etc. Its you that has to get behind the wheel & drive it. I am perfectly happy with my decision & have other opportunities to drive stick when I want a fix. Good luck with your purchase.
Oh yeah, how is the buy back working out? Hope they are good to you!
Hi, they are good so far. took a little longer to get the check which is this tuesday. I won't be get one at this time.cause of my knee. but will asap. thanks for the reply.
p.s. Knee replacement not bad but that first day up is a killer.

Welcome to TN! Where in PA?
When you ask, "...as good as...", what do you mean by "good"? There are countless ways to answer a question like that!
I have the auto because mine is a daily-driver and I spend a lot of time in rush-hour traffic. The manual would drive me crazy. If the truck were just a toy, I'm sure I would've gone for the manual.
The manual is geared a little lower across the board, including highway speeds, so fuel economy is about 1mpg lower.
I would guess both are relatively equally reliable. I have seen posts about troubles with both transmissions, and they are rare.
If you tell us how you plan to use the truck, we can give you better information.

Hi, I;m in western pa. just north of pitt. I using my truck as a hunting and trapping truck. If i go off road it would be on a farmer lane. sometimes hauling little stuff. nothing real heavy. mostly just my toy truck. I do drive in the city just to go to events like ball games. Not a everyday thing. thanks all.
First off let me say I love manuals (driven many before) but I opted for the auto in this truck for the following reasons
Pros for the auto
1) First gear in the manual is way too low for in city driving for me (daily driver) although it would be a help on the trail
2) better fuel economy!
3) The double cab long box doesn't come with a manual
4) the ancient parking brake lever on the manuals would piss me off
5) crawling in traffic is easier in an auto (slow crawl)
6) and finally when I am too druck to drive it, anyone can drive an auto where as with a stick I am sure they would grenade my clutch if they didn't know how to drive it.
Cons for the auto
1) the auto tranny tends to go into OD anytime speed is constant above 30 mph
2) On the trail trying to climb a hill I actually stalled the auto tranny (don' know how it happened)
3) Shifts to 1st gear too often on a slow rolling start 5mph to 10mph
4) Sometimes when cold it takes awhile to shift into OD (about 1 min)
5) Doesn't keep the gear well, by that i mean when speeding up it wants to downshift to help rather than keep the same gear. You know when it punches the rpms to like 4k when going from 35mph to 55mph for about 2 seconds then shifts back up lowering the rpms again, goes from 4th gear to 2nd rather than 4th gear to 3rd
All that being said if they made a Double cab long box with a manual I would have probably gotten the manual.

Now if that's not a good reason for an auto, I don't know what is.

Haha seriously. I'm always stuck at my buddies house after we party for this exact reason.
I've always had manuals..... but since started driving Auto's myself. My last manual was a 96 tacoma.
I test drove both auto & manual. I hated the way the manual shifted. You take your foot off the clutch and off the gas - you'd expect the rpm's to drop. It didn't..... It was really weird trying to get the rpm's matched when letting the clutch out and gas. I'm really not in to spend that much money on something and *hope* I'll get used to it.
With the Auto - you get slightly better gas mileage (per window sticker) than the manual. With the tow package - you get tranny & oil coolers and a better tow rating (not that I've need it, just added benefits).
Since you have a bad knee - perhaps the Auto is a better choice.
I drove MGs. You really don't want an auto in a sports car, it takes away from the purpose of the car. In a truck I use for hauling and transportation the auto does a better job. Besides that, usually when a guy gets older the manual is not as important to him as it was when he was young. The autos today are a far better transmission than in years past. I understand completely the guys that are going off road. A manual adds to the joy of driving off road just like driving a sports car through the mountains. In this truck if your main purpose is to haul or just to transport I would go auto.
I've driven nothing but manuals since I was 16. I bought my 08 in the 6spd manual. If I had to do it over again I would have gotten the automatic. The manual transmission and clutch in this truck is absolutely horrible, it really takes away from the driving pleasure. Do a search for '6spd manual' or 'clutch' and read some of those threads. It may make you think twice...
+1^ aaronk is right, ive only had manuals and my 08 is a manual and i feel like i wasted 30k. I hate it because it's so different to drive. Im going on 4 months with the truck and still drive it like the day i learned to drive stick when i was 15. And first gear is way to low for around town or city driving.
