Has anyone ever heard of Toyota incorporating their hybrid technology into future Tacomas or other trucks? This is excluding the A-Bat...that thing isn't a truck, and it looks absurd. If not, hypothetically, would you consider purchasing a hybrid Tacoma?
Never ever would I purchase a hybrid truck. Diesel makes much more sense.

I haven't heard of Toyota incorporating the Hybrid in their trucks but it wouldn't be a bad idea with the price of gasoline. The Highlander is now offered with the Hybrid and that is about the same size. I really don't think I would be interested unless the power/torque would remain the same.
Specs on the Highlander Hybrid (taken directly from Toyota.com)

What doesn't make sense is the price of diesel. I haven't been looking but I don't know of any diesel trucks that puts out the same hp/torque as the 4 cyl tacoma but beats in gas mileage. Seems like diesel is reserved for heavy duty trucks only.

I can get by with 165 hp, and I like the 5 spd, just a bit better gas mileage would be nice

The Toyota Hilux comes as a Diesel. Unfortunately, not sold in the US. They get 28mpg with similar power / torque as the V6 Tacoma.

The hybrids are not designed to go off-road. Toyota's website even says the highlander hybrid is not designed for off-road use. If there would be a limitation like that, I would never even consider a tacoma hybrid.

Good point. Then they need to make an efficient little turbo diesel for the states, it would be nice

They are not sold here because the Japanese car manufacturers managed to convince the american consumer / driver that hybrid is the way to go, and that paying a huge premium for that technology was a good idea.

The reason we don't have more diesels is the EPA has said something along the lines that new model diesels have to meet the same emission requirements as gasoline vehicles. (models that already had diesels were grandfathered in so they can still sell those) Many diesels could meet this requirement if you add a substance called Urea to the emissions system every time you change your oil. But the EPA ruled that the emissions system should be maintenance free for 7yrs, and having to add urea would not meet the maintenance free rule. I would love a tacoma with an efficient diesel. With the new clean burning diesels around, hopefully the can meet emissions requirements soon.
If toyota released a hybrid tacoma tomorrow with the 2.7 4 banger paired with the hybrid synergy drive that could give me 35 mpg, I would be first in line to get one.
You guys are close on why diesel isn't here but the main reason is that people hated the 70's and 80's models sold here. They remember the really loud and smelly Mercedes and VW's and now there's this stigma against diesels. I mentioned that I would like a diesel Tacoma at work the other day and all I heard was "Eww, they're loud and they smell." (there's a lot of women where I work, lol).
But yeah, Sechsgang's right, diesel is a better option than this hybrid nonsense.
