Hilux diesels

I just got back from a trek through Australia and New Zealand, and besides the natural scenery the thing I drooled over most was all of the Hilux I saw! It's amazing what the rest of the world does with these trucks. I'm assuming they're basically Tacomas with slight modifications, right?

I thought it was interesting to see that all the highway work crews all had Hilux - here in the US people in construction think anything less than a F250 might as well be a Yugo. Yet over there, the Hilux handle it all. In 6 weeks, I only saw 2 full size trucks - both of those were in camper van parks towing trailers.

I wish Toyota would bring their diesel to the US, and drop the Tacoma's back to the same size they were from '04 and earlier... Bigger is not always better. Heck, I even heard on the radio while in Australia that they just passed the US as the fattest country on the planet - and they still make out fine in their smaller trucks!

Nope, skin is the same from the doors back, but the guts are different. Hiluxes have fully-boxed frame, for starters.

Hmm, I know the Hilux is pretty bad ass but....

do you really think that the Hilux has the power to pull some of the loads that are pretty common place in industry (oil fields for example) typically pulled by very large diesel engines?
