Why?

I believe using the right oil (as in what the owners manula states) no matter how it looks, is what really matters.

BTW, anyone out there remember ARCO Graphite? Blacker than coal out of the bottle.

Valvoline oils are very clear straight from the bottle but clarity of oil (new or used) is not an indicator of quality.

I read an old post about about Pennzoil Yellow Bottle being dirty right out of the bottle. I was just curious. I'm running PP in my truck right now and it's still very light after 4K. I didn't know what was meant by dirty out of the bottle.

I always thought Castrol GTX was pretty clear. Haven't bought it in a number of years though...

I just finished changing the oil in my '07. I had used Pen.Plat. for 4k miles to clean it out. I like using dino and doing my oil change intervals at 4k. I was able to find Motorcraft 5w20 and just finished filling her up. No joke, No TICK. That is truely the best I've heard that engine run at idle. Now, lets hope the 5w20 will hold up for 4k.

... not to derail the subject but I've always used Mobil1 in my other rides (still do) but my Scion is the first Toyota product in my stable. Do they do just as well as others on full synthetic?

Any answers appreciated.

Now back to the original topic.

Never checked how clear it was but I went with a case of motorcraft 5w-20 for the last 2 changes instead of the mobile 1 I'd been using, I'll be buying more.

And what does this mean?

The argument could be made that an oil doing its job will look dirty, as it is carrying contaminants in it.

Or clean-looking oil might indicate an effective oil filter.

I agree with others that color (or lightness) out-of-the-bottle is no indication of oil quality, good or bad.

Color is definitely a very poor indicator of oil quality.

Check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php
if you really want to get into the technical side of petroleum selection.

I know it's a bad indicator but I was always curious as to why some were darker out of the bottle than others. I know my Mobil 1 filter is working and my oil is light because it's clean. Yep, sparkling clean inside the engine.
