the tacoma is awesome and all but too close to fullsize in price and mileage the old hilux would haul as much as a fullsize gm truck half the cost and half the fuel and run forever

For better or for worse, virtually all vehicles get larger as new versions of them are introduced. Of course there will be trade-offs, but I agree it would be nice to have a small truck available again. I love my Tacoma, but a lot of people would appreciate having something smaller -- from an economy standpoint and for tighter trail use.
