Insurance want my Mileage

So I just got a letter from my insurance co asking for my odometer reading. I assume it's because I have my truck listed as "for pleasure" and annual mileage as 2000 or less. This may be a slight underestimate for my truck. So my question is, what is going to happen when I tell them my mileage is higher than 2k? Will they drop me or just raise the rates? I've been planning on switching companies anyways...if they drop me will that make it more difficult to get insurance from someone else? Do they have any way of verifying how many miles I have?

Raise your rate. Yes, they can make you come in for a vehicle inspection, and if you refuse, they can drop you. Been there, done that with State Farm, but I was in the under 7500 / yr category

how much over are u?

i use my truck as a daily driver and told them 12k annualy. i have way more than that, but they haven't checked since i projected the 12k annualy thing. i think they knew 12k was feasible. but 2k? ehhh idk.

It is not unusual for insurance companies to ask for mileage, if you have moved, etc. Your rate is based on miles driven, location, number of drivers, etc.

2K is just too low for a late model vehicle. Should only use this approach for collector cars, motor home, a vehicle that sits at home most of the time. Insurance companies know all the tricks.

They most likely will raise your rates, doubt if the policy will be cancelled. Some insurance companies do sky rocket rates at renewal apparently to drive car owners off they no longer want to insure.

yeah just a tad over . just say since the last time, you had to sell your commuter car bc of hard times. they'll raise your rate, but they'll still keep you. they want your business

my insurance lady told me that the lower your mileage the higher the insurance would be...... because the fewer miles driven increased your risk of getting into an accident on a miles driven per accident scale.

their thought is that if you drive a lot more miles, you're less likely to crash.

Interesting. We put on about 15K per vehicle per year but we're listed with State Farm as driving under 7500/yr for work/school. State Farm's rates are based on how many miles you drive to/from work/school not pleasure miles. An inspection by them on the odo wouldn't give them any information as to how many of those miles were for that purpose.

If they really wanted to verify it, they would take my home address, days I commute to the bus (non telework days), and mileage to the bus. They could calculate it from that rather than checking the miles since it doesn't tell them anything.

Insurance companies use a lot of BS to raise rates.

A friend had her insurance rate doubled because the insurance company used their own methods to compute her "credit score."

This was one missed CC payment that was less then 5 years ago and less then 5 years of credit history. She had been insured with the company a few years and never had a claim.

She owns a house, has a decent paying job, good credit score per all 3 of the major credit rating services.

She switched companies having lower rates with no problem.
