If Toyota starts manufacturing all of its Tacomas at the Mexico plant and lays off all of these American workers, that's it for me. I will not buy a Tacoma made in Mexico.
Unless I missed it in the article, I did not see anything that stated they would move their operations to Mexico.
With GM pulling out of the NUMMI plant, it put more pressure on Toyota and if Toyota continues to post losses, I can't blame them for shutting down plants, but I do not see them moving to Mexico.
If there is additional info regarding the manufacturing in Mexico, please post...thanks!

Toyota currently makes the Tacoma at its California and Tijuana plants, and production at the California plant was down 83% this year. With sales numbers the way they are, Toyota just doesn't need to have two separate plants producing the truck, so it makes sense that they would shut down the US plant and move all production to Mexico where labor costs are a lot cheaper.
Plus if you read the posts from a month or two ago showing the older article (from a couple of years ago), Toyota Execs in Japan were requiring the NUMMI management to get the labor costs down or else. And now they can't just stay at NUMMI because the factory is part of GM's bankruptcy liquidation. I can't see them buying out GM's half of the plant in this market and having to deal with the high-priced US manufacturing costs (knowing how much money these guys are paid...it's ridiculous!). I think they're heading out of the US.

not to mention that quality inspection from Mexico is rated higher than the Fremont (NUMMI) plant, even though they have bigger and more technologically advanced equipment. Go figure

I am a former NUMMI employee and spent 5 years manufacturing Toyota Tacomas. I worked in Body Weld where the cabs were welded together. I spent 3 months in Japan for the launch of the '05 Tacomas. My personal touch is on each one of your trucks. I programmed much of the automated equipment there including the robots and hood and door hemmers. Fortunately I left NUMMI a few years ago and am not affected by the plant closing but it is very sad to see many of my old friends and coworkers lose their jobs. I agree, there are many problems there but still NUMMI was a great place to work.
BTW, they won't move it to Mexico. It will most likely be moved to San Antonio where new equipment already exists that can readily accept all the M-Jigs etc. for the Tacoma.

Just recently got a 2010 Pre-runner to replace my 2007 5-lugger access-cab and was surprised to se it was built at Nummi in August. When is the official closing date?
I'm friends with the service director at my dealership and his take on it is GM pulling out of the facility was the nail in their coffin.
What's your take?
I am told by inside sources that the plant is closing March 31st.
GM pulling out definitely was the nail in the coffin. Toyota has been struggling with this plant for years, it being the most expensive plant they run.
I am being told they are currently cranking out trucks to have enough inventory on hand while the equipment is moved.

Thanks for the info.
I hate to see any more businesses and jobs leave Kalifornia.
At least I got one built here before they shut down.

They left for a simple reason. California is not business friendly with all the taxes that corps. and businesses have to pay. They went to more business friendly state...period! I am awaiting the day for California to go bankrupt so big government will fail and the private sector will buy it up.

All our state knows how to do is tax-tax-tax.
That combined with GM pulling out and the UAW that Toyota was left to deal with alone made it a bad business situation for them to stay here.

Unfortunately, taxing never solves anything other than drive up the nanny state hand outs, drive businesses away, and feed the behemoth government which is never ever good!
