Northern WA Trails

Hey guys, I'm headed up to northern WA to stay with family and check out their new house. I'll be driving the Tac, and I was hoping to get a little light wheeling done while I'm up there. Anybody have any good suggestions for "blue square" trails in the Bellingham area? Thanks.

Kind of a lot of hippies on that side of the state to be doing much wheeling. Hopefully someone who lives over there may have some more insight for you on where to find some trails. Good luck!

Nothing legal in the Bellingham area. There's Walker Valley just south of Bellingham but that's a little more than "blue square" from what I hear...

If you want a nice drive with a good destination and a pretty fun road to drive up check out Twin Lakes off the Mt. Baker Highway. It's a forest service road that puts you right smack dab in the middle of two alpine lakes. The last few miles of the road are pretty rough and very steep. I've never had to throw it in to 4WD, but the traction control did kick in on one steep rocky switchback climb. Not wheeling so to speak, but again, a fun drive with a nice destination.

Walker Valley is the closest, but not for the faint of heart unless you're okay with body damage or have a good spotter. Just to get into the trails, you have to climb over quite a few large rocks. The whatcom county orv park was closed a few years ago after a bunch of inbred hillbillies drove through the creek/river in non designated fording areas during the salmon spawning season . Your best bet, as aaronk said, is Twin lakes or take the Mt. Baker highway and just explore the endless dirt and old logging roads that are all over the place. Be careful though, as quite a few mud slides occurred during the winter and I'm not sure if they have all been fixed yet. Also, go all the way to Artists Point on Mt. Baker, it really is an awe inspiring view, and if you like to hike, the trails are everywhere. There are a few places down by Seattle, such as Tahuya or Evans Creek, but I've heard they're not to be taken lightly.

HAHA! So true, so sadly true lol. Worst of all are the lifestyle hippies, these well off(financially) people who live in big houses and buy special $10 cups of coffee that I can't even spell. Yet they stand on the soap box and preach to everyone else about cutting back to help the environment, because they drive a brand new prius and want you to know about it.

Sounds like the Mt. Baker trails are perfect for what I'm looking for. It's just going to be me and my girl, and she is far from a decent spotter. I keep telling her "just point in the direction you want me to go!" She just keeps trying to explain what the rocks look like that I'm about to climb over. lol.
