In Jamaica we get our Land Cruiser Prado (Lexus GX) from Japan, the V6 is the biggest engine available, no V8. So far the 1st generation Tacoma has shared the same V6 with the 2nd generation Prado and now the current Tacoma has the same V6 as the 3rd generation Prado. Now the newly designed Prado will have a V8 available, will it be the same for the Tacoma ?
Because the Tacoma is designed as a mid-size pickup and adding a V8 to the Tacoma would encroach upon the more expensive Tundra sales and most likely net Toyota less of a profit. If people have no reason to pay more for a Tundra then they aren't going to pay for a Tundra and they are just going to get a Tacoma. The Tundra and the Tacoma aren't too far apart in towing capacity anyways, it's 6500lbs vs. 10,800lbs. So adding a V8 would close that gap and make people buy less of the more profitable Tundra's.

^ not only that it would make the tacoma far faster than the tundra. Odds are than the drivetrain would need to be beefed up to handle that type of stress.

Doubt it would be far faster. It just would not make sense. GM put the 5.3V8 in their midsize last year, sales have been slow to say the least.
Like Sony said the towing capacity would be approaching Tundra levels (although 4300#s is quite a gap....comparing highest capacitys on each BTW), it is just not necessary.
Tacoma doesn't need a V8, gas mileage for that model would suffer giving it a lower rating. A 4.0L engine is pretty huge for a truck that size anyway.

But wouldn't that mean that Toyota already has a drop in V8 engine for the Tacoma?
Yes. There have been people that have done the 4.7 swap themselves. Toyota will never put a v8 in the tacoma.
/thread.

Exactly what basically everyone has said. Whats the point of a V8? Worse gas milage? With gas prices the way they are it would only deter people from buying them. People want better fuel milage without have to downgrade in engine size, why would they want to upgrade an engine to get a little more power and lose a LOT of MPG, doesnt seem to smart. But then again thats my .02.

Towing capacity is not solely reliant upon the powerplant of the vehicle. GM's midsize truck is actually rated for LESS towing/payload due to the increased weight of the 5.3L
edit: i am having trouble verifying this... if anybody has #s to confirm or deny I would appreciate the help.
They should make a V8 XRunner. I wouldn't think that would encroach on Tundra sales. Not to mention it would be insane. It would be kinda like the F150 Lightning only not a ass Ford.
