floor mat recall

Toyota doing a recall on floor mats!
http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/play...9344&ch=224106
Doesn't give many details, but maybe all those folks on here complaining about random acceleration and revving out of control were right after all.

This recall should be called "Idiot recall".

That should apply only to mats without the anchor holes. Anchored mats are not an issue, others can ride up and jam the gas pedal. We had it happen a couple times with a Jeep and aftermarket mats, but no problem, no accidents.

According the the news a couple nights ago, a cop driving a Lexus got up to 120 mph and crashed. People should know that they can slip it into neutral and the worst that can happen is the engine might blow, but the car will stop accelerating and you shouldn't crash. Also, the ignition can be turned off.

Not so if you turn it off to the accessories position which kills the engine. We're not talking about turning it all the way off to lock the steering wheel.

And if you listen to the 911 call in the video, the 911 operator even asked them why they didn't turn the key off. They just ignored her and decided to drive thru an intersection at full speed. Brakes must not have worked because the floor mats piled up were too thick to use? If they're not turning the key off when they have enough time to call 911, I'd say it sounds more like a suicide setup to sound like a mechanical failure.

Disagree.. you should be still able to steer unless you turn the key all the way till lock position. It'll be very heavy/hard though.

Yes what happened to the N? And why would you push the gas pedal that far?

They should have mandatory safety classes. Like in many countries you have to go to driving school to get the driving license and they taught us to keep on pumping the brake pedals even if they don't seem to work.. i think also hand breaks (i think they also call emergency brakes) were involved and worst case is start using friction to brake like side rails. and all this is if your clutch died gas got stuck and you broke the key inside the key hole.

That is very sad they couldn't stop their car.

I agree; with more than 1 person in the car & they did nothing but make a 911 call? Sounds fishy to me.Just reach down & jerk the mat back, turn key off,lay on brakes & e-brake.Alot of these things are natural reaction to most everyone & this was a police officer? I feel for the families, but things just don't add up here.

Enough brain power to dial 911 but not enough to shut the car off??

True, true, did not think about it. You'd loose power-assist, but still could steer.

On the other hand shifting to neutral when caught in this situation definitely gives the rev-limiter a great work-out!!!

and yes I have aftermarket floor mats which caused this rather harrowing experience!!

Oh wait but what if it was one of those push-button-start kind? is it possible to forced turn off while accelerating? Like push and hold type of thing? PC users would know well..

Thats just crazy, never had the floormat thing happen to me b4. I feel for the families and all but I just do not understand how a State cop with all their training and such could not respond to this emergency. When I was a young man of 17 yrs old or so (many moons ago) had a car that when the accelorator pedal was pushed to the floor it would stay there but only sometimes. Well even knowing this I had a bad habit of pushing it to the floor. One time it stuck and could not get it to release by pulling it back with my toe like I usually did. I asked my front seat passenger to reach down and pull it with his hand, luckily that worked. I was getting ready to turn the ignition off.

I was certainly panicking and anyone in this situation WILL panic, but managed to handle the situation even as an inexperienced driver. Thus I do not understand why the cop did not turn the ignition off. Oh well we will never know what took place.

Always feel it's bad form to criticize a dead man in a situation like this but:

Number 1 thing when you slide behind the wheel is "How does this thing work?" This was a rental.

A Lexus like that one takes somewhere in the area of 8 or less to go 0 to 60. 60 to 120? At least another 10 or better. How did he get in so deep without trying something like move it to neutral, pull up on the throttle, hold the kill button....? Heck, run the damn thing into the guard rail to scrub off some speed, anything but full tilt into an intersection.

Remember the Audi unintended accel deal? Car and Driver mag was able to stop an Audi from 70mph--with the engine at full throttle.

If the brakes on this car were good, he should have been able to stop it--if he went after it whole hog, and not halfway, heating them up beyond use while the speed built.

Easy to second guess. Too bad for all, and now I suppose we'll have some other silly horse poop added to cars at great expense......

From the article in SFGATE.com
The driver could have put the car in neutral to disengage the engine from the automatic transmission, Lyons said.

The driver also could have turned off the electronically keyed car by holding down the start switch for three seconds, but that could have locked the steering wheel, turned off the headlights and cut power-assist to the brakes, Lyons said.
