I still stand by the fact that there is nothing wrong with the pedal or the floor mats. It is all operator error, and the Toyota name is being tarnished by morons that aren't competent enough to drive.
wooo, new gas pedal. I guess i should get it done, but not sure i really care.
i still don't understand why the lexus driver just didn't shut off the engine, or toss it into neutral.
He was driving a rental, which he did not take the time to get familiar with before loading his family. It was a push button start, he was unaware of the fact that if you hold the push button start in for several seconds it will kill the engine. Once again this accident was blamed on Toyota for an operator error, which began with the rental company stacking an all weather floor mat on top of the factory carpet one... And there is no excuse for him not shifting into neutral. I learned this stuff in driver's ed, didn't anyone else?
Just because it ended in a tragic accident doesn't mean Toyota should take the blame, when it was totally the drivers fault...

i followed the story and i can understand not being able to shut off the engine because of the push button. i wouldn't have relized that either. However, there is no excuse for not putting it in N. That's just common sense that you would think a CHP officer would know. Don't they spend there day in cars?

I haven't received my letter yet, but I would have to see the new gas peddle before I would waste my time getting something changed that doesn't need to be changed.

Years ago I came out of a store and noticed a commotion in the parking lot. A Ford F-350 had mashed up about 6 cars. There was a 2,000 YO man standing next to it with his wife, who was crying. My Subaru was mashed into another car, totaled. Several other cars were smashed up, most totaled.
The 2,000 YO man stated he had just bought the truck and blamed the incident on the truck, claiming the throttle got stuck.
In looking at the circle of damage, it appeared he hit several cars with his front end, then put it in Reverse and mashed up 3-4 more with the rear end. His truck was idling in Park when I walked over to it.

There is a slight typo, it should read 2007-10 Toyota Tacoma. Link goes to AP story.
Toyota has a problem with their-fly-by-wire system. Replacing the gas pedal won't solve the problem it just gets the NHTSA off Toyota's back, and since the NHTSA agreed to the pedal recall, maybe get 'em some cover against future claims. And yeah, there are plenty of people driving that should not be so not all the reports of the vehicles surging or accelerating on their own are going to be true, just most of them.
Frankly I think they should outlaw automatic transmissions. Hey, you're driving along in your 6 speed and all of a sudden the vehicle wants to go 100 mph, you just step on the clutch and the problem's over. Think of all the putzes that would no longer be able to pass their driving tests... why the roads would be almost empty.

I don't think so. I got an 06 and I got a letter from Toyota.

I especially like how the dealerships will begin shortening the pedals any way they see fit beginning in January, and then Toyota will replace them again after April when they have the new pedals available. So I assume this means the dealerships will grind down the bottom of the pedals or something. Think I'll stay away from any dealerships for awhile since it's likely a safety recall which means they can't give you back your vehicle until it's been repaired.
