1993 tacoma cranks up but will not stay running
Hello its been quite a while since iv'e been here last well my new project is a motor swap taking a 22r-e out of a 1993 tacoma and transplanting it into a 1986 toyota pick up. I was given the wrecked truck after a friend of mine rear ended a car that had stopped in the fast lane for no apperent reason, it cost him his life after a three month battel in the hospital. So after cutting all the wreckage away the first thing i wanted to do was make sure it ran OK before pulling it out to start the swap, aside from the a/c bracket breaking the timing chain cover and the water pump being jammed back and such, everything looked pretty good.although the resonator ball that runs to the air cleaner box and the lower part of the air box was smashed during the wreak i plugged the hose leading to the resonator ball could this be what is causing the problem? what is done with this hose when an after market filter is put in place? will the engine run with out the resistance of the air cleaner in place?
Now to the heart of the problem, when i crank the engine it starts, but as soon as i let off the key when the engine starts up, it runs like i have just stepped on the gas and then immediately stalls out, if i hold the key in the crank position the engine will continue to run and pick up speed but just as soon as the key is released it will run for just a second or until the fuel that the injectors have pumped in to the engine is used up then the engine stalls out.
i got to looking and went and bought a Haynes repair manual and saw that the cold start injector control switch was damaged in the crash so thinking that it was not letting the injector work i took a voltage reading while cranking and i have voltage to it when it needs to be there. So to try to isolate weather it is a spark problem or a fuel problem I pulled a spark plug wire and put a grounded spark plug on it to see if the spark was still their while the engine spun to a stop when the key was released, and i can tell the spark is still firing until the engine comes to a stop, telling me that the problem is in the fuel system..
All the wiring is in good shape to the injector control unit, and the fuses and relays are working OK and are not blown. The steering column was damaged badly when my friend was thrown into it and the ignition switch will not turn completely off to let the key come out. but it seems to work correctly.
To me the problem seems to be that the injector controll unit is not getting voltage after the key is realeased after the cranking sequence is over with.
I have a wiring diagram but don't know the theory of the system, where does the voltage come from to power the injectors after the start sequence ends? seems like i need to run a jumper wire from the battery to the injector control unit to bypass the ignition switch.
where do i connect the voltage from the battery to the control unit? or
where can i find a trouble shooting guide to help me with this?
any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance BigTod.
