Moving to California???

I might be moving back to California sometime soon for job reasons and have some questions regarding insurance and registration costs for my '06 Tacoma.

I live in Oregon and we don't have a sales tax up here and I know that I will have to pay it if I move back. Does anybody know how much this would cost for a mid $20k truck? Also, how much is registration? Insurance costs for a mid 30s, single guy with a ticket and an accident on my record?

I know there was a similar thread a few weeks back that got closed due to members insulting each other. If you can leave out the politics this time around, that would be cool.

You can use this calculator to determine what your registration fee will be. Insurance is widely variable depending on the insurance company involved. If you're former military or a dependent go with USAA...can't go wrong with them.

Uh, you won't have to pay taxes on something you bought out of state. You might check with DMV in cali to see what they will charge you to re-register the car in CA. You'll have to get it smoged for sure (damned smog nazi's) and maybe have it inspected (I doubt that though). But you shouldn't have to pay taxes on the truck itself. You only pay those taxes when you buy it in state....

You shouldn't have to have a smog check because your truck isn't old enough yet. They charge us a fee the first few years instead. Also, smog checks aren't required everywhere in CA. Just depends on where you life.

Smog checks are required if you register an out of state vehicle in California, whether it's old enough or not.

Good luck coming here. Worst time in the history of the state to be moving in, and the smog check system is the least of your worries. AFAIK, Tacomas are all 50 state, and since it's an '06, you might be off the hook anyway.

As for the sales tax, only if you bought it with the last year and brought it into California. This rule prevents buying from out of state to dodge the taxes and does not appear to apply to those like you moving into the state:
