Toyota Cancels 2011 Lexus SC, Considers Ditching 2011 Avalon Too

It looks like consumer demand for more fuel-efficient models is affecting the super number one greenest manufacturer from the land of the rising sun, too. According to the folks with the corporate Inside Line, the 2011 Lexus LF-A-based 2011 Lexus SC has been canned. Additionally, it looks like the 2011 Toyota Avalon may meet the same fate, replaced instead with a long-wheelbase 2012 Toyota Camry.

Originally, Lexus's plan was to develop a new SC based on the LF-A, but softened-up a bit for the colostomy-bag crowd at which the current model is targeted. However, sales of the so-ugly-it-hurts $67,120 hardtop convertible dropped 40% during the first half of 2008, necessitating a total rethink. We guess the market for a 288 HP 16-mpg city, non-performance luxury convertible isn't as big as was once thought.

Ever since Lexus changed the SC series into more of a roadster and higher base pricing and the design do not fit my taste of style/price. The SC300/400 Soarers with some Supra indulgence would win my favoritism. The SC's of today are also chic that I'll puke if its a guy driving them. Sad to say...

Who would want a high price, low mpg, heavy, not fast, sports coupe which isn't all that great at the 'sports' part and too small to really be a decent sized 2+2 coupe in the first place?

The only thing it's got going for it is the HT/convertable. And even then with the roof down I doubt the trunk space is stellar.

Perhaps the SC is getting canned to make room in the Lexus lineup for a more robust IS lineup, which will directly compete with the 3-Series line. IS Coupes and Convertibles to take the SC's place? I'd much rather drive a sportier IS hardtop convertible coupe than a soft, femmy SC anyday.

That car was kinda lame in terms of performance anyway. y. I think it betrayed the concept of the original SC300/400. They shoulda kept the 6 & make it more sporty. My $0.02

Won't miss it a bit

I like that someone else actually states that this car is Ugly. I won't miss it at all, only I have to deal with the fact that it was ever built in the first place. Really - what was thier point with this car anyway?

I totally agree, whenever I'm having a car related argument with my friends, I know that the SC is a permanent card in their deck, and they might whip it out any moment.

What an ugly car that was, and subpar performance.
