Believe it or not, they still build the Toyota Tacoma. And like other formerly-compact compact trucks, it's been neglected for some time now: 2005 was the last major redesign.
But according to Ward's Automotive, Marty McFly can lust after a new Toyota truck as soon as this year. Toyota division chief Bob Carter told Ward's Auto that details of the new Tacoma will come "later this year." Expect the new Tacoma to sway even further from Toyota's line of small pickups, if the rest of the moribund compact pickup segment is any indication.
This has been heavily implied for awhile, but great to see it confirmed. Can't wait to see it. Hopefully it returns to the truly compact roots.

I'm hoping for the same thing, but I doubt it. The Tacoma is clearly the sales leader for mid size trucks, it would be a mistake for Toyota to tinker with it too much.
It wouldn't surprise me though, if the new Tacoma is less capable and lighter for better gas mileage.

2012 is basically a like a mid model change, just a new front fascia and few interior changes.

I'm hoping 2013 will be a complete redesign.
The article says it's all-new, and they wouldn't bother to do minor updates for 2012 then redesign it the very next year.

I suppose it depends on what you expect from the change. The engine, transmission, and other specifications will remain the same.

Using the same engines doesn't mean it's just a grille change or a small refresh. The TR and GR engines in the Taco aren't very old, so it was pretty much a given that they would still carry over.

I don't believe they will keep the hp at 236 tho, considering the 4Runner's is now rated at 270, and they're like, siblings!
No doubt it will get the updated Dual VVt-i 1GR. Only reason it doesn't have it now is probably due to the redesign looming.
